ACTIVITY:<br />

a) Develop a reward/incentive program for employee environmental innovation in public<br />

works. (1 points)<br />

APPROACH:<br />

Create a forum/mechanism by which employees can make suggestions to enhance the<br />

environmental performance of public works functions, along with an awards or incentive<br />

program.<br />

SUGGESTED DOCUMENTATION:<br />

Describe the operation of the forum/mechanism.<br />

BENEFIT:<br />

Often times, due to their constant field involvement, employees can generate interesting and<br />

innovative ideas geared towards environmental stewardship that decision makers may overlook.<br />

Education<br />

Credit 7: Staff education.<br />

ACTIVITY:<br />

a) Offer green fleet management training to all applicable departments. (1 points)<br />

b) Train and certify select staff as certified arborists. (1 points)<br />

APPROACH:<br />

Become schooled in the facets of green fleet management and provide outreach to other local<br />

government departments not currently utilizing a green fleet. Select staff to undertake necessary<br />

training to become a certified arborist by the International Society of Aboriculture.<br />

SUGGESTED DOCUMENTATION:<br />

Submit materials that describe the type of training/outreach offered. Submit copies of individual<br />

certifications.<br />

BENEFIT:<br />

Generally, public works has the necessary equipment, staff, and facilities to operate a green fleet<br />

program, and is best suited to extend the program to other departments. Certain public works<br />

staff should be trained in aboriculture such that tree planting, trimming, and preservation are<br />

carried out in an effective fashion.<br />
