Bundy's veteran just keeps on keeping on WHEN it comes around to Bundaberg Cup time this year, there's no doubting Red Bow Tie will put on his best attire and head up from Maryborough to do battle with the youngsters. That's been the plan with him for the past couple of years and 2007 is unlikely to be any different. Red Bow Tie (Bobniak-Mary Wana Tree) is a bit of a warhorse around the Bundaberg track, more used to the place than most who go there every week. In fact, most weeks Red Bow Tie is there taking his place against the top graders. It's been happening for a few years now. In fact (to time of writing) Red Bow Tie has raced 92 times for 20 wins and 28 placings. Of those victories 19 have come at Bundaberg with one win at Albion Park. He's an international dog if ever there was one, owned by Londoner Kevin Robinson, and bred, reared and trained for most of his career by Rick Hassall firstly at Torbinlea and now Maryborough. Rick and his wife Sam bred Red Bow Tie. "I got the dam through David Church who put us in touch with Jeff and Lillian Jones in Brisbane," said Rick. "They had raced the dam who was a very good bitch and a city winner. "But she did get a ticket for fighting but had more than 70 starts and did it only once," he said. In June, 2002, Mary Wana Tree produced nine pups to her mating to Bobniak. Rick decided to utilize the worldwide web to advertise them. "Kevin paid $900 for him at three months." The Hassalls reared the litter and Red Bow Tie ("I don't know how Kevin came up with that name") went into training showing good promise. "I broke them in myself and trialled every Friday night at Albion Park for ages," said Rick. "Red Bow Tie was going really well, but at his first start he ran a shocker." Not to be denied, Kevin and Rick backed him up and were confident Red Bow Tie would race well. They backed him, and he won. "He paid $19," said Rick. "Kevin and I were both on. Kevin had opened an Australian TAB account. He backed him straight out and got the trifecta." Kevin wanted to see his dog race at TAB tracks so he could utilize his TAB account. He didn't like it coming back in his face." Red Bow Tie had "about 20 starts" for Jones over six or more months. "Jeff rang Kevin in England and explained just how futile it was trying to get Red Bow Tie accustomed to sand track racing," said Rick. "I came down and got him to race at Bundaberg and that's what we've done ever since." Kevin came from England to attend a race meeting put on for members of the Global Greyhounds website, and to see his dog. But because the dog was now not racing on TAB tracks, Kevin decoded to give Red Bow Tie to the Hassall family. And what a present he has been. He won the Bundaberg Cup Consolation in 2005 in faster time than the winner of the Cup, and has added 18 other races. "He's an absolutely gorgeous dog," said Rick. "Very affectionate. In fact, we've never had a dog as affectionate as him." Rick insists Red Bow Tie is not ready for retirement just yet despite rising five. "He loves racing," he said. "The unfortunate thing is he is best suited over 550m but we don't get too many over that distance at Bundaberg so he has to go in against the speedsters over 460m." The dog is very sound, but a sprung toe in December last year cost him the greyhound of the year title at Bundaberg. "He was in front on the points tally, but missing that last month racing enabled Looking Foxy to come from behind and win the award by three points," said Rick. Red Bow Tie will make the regular trek from Maryborough to Bundaberg as often as he can "at least until the end of this year" according to Rick Hassall. While the dog has been a great moneyspinner for his connections, Rick laments the fate of his litter brother Tyler's Hobo who was the best of the litter but broke a hock. Another of the litter, Mary Burra Fiery (Rick is a Maryborough fireman) went south and became Gunnedah greyhound of the year in 2005. The Hassals have kept in contact with Kevin Robinson in England. "I've just borrowed Mick and Selena Zammit's bitch Cardio Spark to breed a litter," said Rick. "Kevin suggested we put the bitch to Irish champ Premier Fantasy. Kevin rates him the Irish Brett Lee." The bitch produced eight pups. Rick sold three, sent Mick and Selena two, has shares in two others and kept a bitch for himself to become a broodbitch of the future. Rick was "horrified" when Kevin told him the name he had received for the Bobniak- Mary Wana Tree pup. "I thought the dog deserved a more masculine name than Red Bow Tie," he said. "But nowadays, it suits him to a tee." The Bundaberg warhorse carries it proudly ... just about every week. And will continue to carry it just as proudly for many months to come. Nothing useful was known about inheritance until just over a century ago, now genetics is exploding, and before too long we should have the complete code, written in three thousand million letters of DNA. Of what it takes to make a human being and have the mastery know how on animals. So, let's talk about greyhounds, my husband and I have owned many of them as pets and "racers" over the years (greyhounds and The Martial Arts are what we use for relaxation). The greyhound family tree has many branches and they are all sight hounds, meaning that they hunt by sight rather than by scent as most dogs do. The following breeds all qualify as Greyhounds, The Afghan Hound, Basenji, Borzoi, Ibizan Hound, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Saluki, Scottish Deerhound, Whippet, Rampur hound of India (very scarce), Chart Polski (polish) Greyhound also very rare, and of course the one this Magazine Centers on, The Standard English Greyhound. The greyhound is a sight hound. Most dogs have relatively poor eyesight and depend on their noses to lead them. A dog's sense of smell is 50,000 times greater than a humans. The sight hound’s sense of smell is not as strong as other breeds (however, still quite good) but, through centuries of necessity these dogs have developed the ability to rely more on their eyes than their noses. Like humans, and unlike other dogs, Genetics and greyhounds they have learned to recognize things by sight. Dogs in the greyhound family originated thousands of years ago in Egypt and the Middle East. For the most part, the terra firma was wide open flat. A dog needed to see what was on the horizon and chase it down with blinding velocity. This of course was for hunting purposes, Consequently the greyhound body has evolved with a definite purpose-speed. Along with the ability to hurdle. The greyhound's physique is a perfect example of genetic cause and effect principle. The aero dynamic stamp of the greyhound is designed to enhance speed: long legs, narrow head, deep chest, sloping ribs, long toes, and in some cases webbed feet. The narrow skull has virtually no stop between the muzzle and the forehead, this causes a razor like cutting through wind. The deep chest and sloping ribs allow for greater lung capacity and endurance. The design of the feet is especially interesting. The shape of a greyhounds pad’s are almost identical to that of a hare’s foot, unlike other dogs the greyhound has compact and long pads just like a rabbit. In my studies I have found this often to be the case i.e. The predator is similar to its prey! Energy systems Rapidly contracting muscles use large amounts of stored energy during high speed exercise. However, a greyhound only expends about four percent of its total daily energy needed during an average 30 second race. A greyhound utilizes two different types of energy producing pathways, depending on the rate of muscular contraction. At slower speeds up to 30-40 kms. An hour, oxygen carried to the muscles by the blood is used by "aerobic" metabolic pathways to produce energy for contraction. However, at normal racing speeds of up to 70 km an hour, the supply of oxygen becomes limited, and energy is produced, with a decreased dependence on oxygen, this is called "anaerobic" energy. The anaerobic fast speed pathway uses up energy stores 12 times faster than the slower aerobic oxygen pathway. Greyhounds cannot run at maximum speed for long distances. Both systems are conditioned by galloping at full speed. The greyhound uses its energy stores about 2 to 3 times faster to accelerate from the start than it does for running at full speed. During the first seven and a half seconds of a race, when its maximum power to weight ratio is used for acceleration, almost half the total energy expended during a race is consumed. In the final 22 and a half seconds of a 30 second race, the greyhound uses about the same amount of energy to complete the remainder of a race, as it does jumping from the boxes and accelerating to the first bend on a normal circle track.
