That's Whispering Honey the Awesome McLaren-Whispering Angel bitch who has just left the Group 2 Qld Futurity victor Honey Mist (Surf Lorian-Whispering Honey). The Morrises bred Whispering Honey and won three races with her, one over 520m and two at 600m at Albion Park. "She could gallop," said Barry. "But she liked to get wide and that cost her a lot of races." It also cost her a place in the Morris kennel. "She was in a 600m at Albion Park one night and we had a very promising dog called Railroad General in the same race," said Sharon. "Whispering Angel was trying to get off the track at the first turn when she fell. The Morrises thought she could make a broodbitch but "we had that many broodbitches at the time we didn't really need her". It just happened that at the same time, Glenn and Pat Carrington in Townsville were looking for a bitch that might become a broodbitch in the future. So in 2003, Whispering Honey headed north to the Carringtons and into Group winning fame as a broodbitch. "I had been coming down to the Ipswich Auction and buying a few pups each year from about the early 2000s," said Glenn. "I got to know Neil Powell at the time." The first year he bought from the auction, Glenn picked up Tropical North who won an Easter Cup in Townsville. Neil had also sent him Alinta who would run third in the last Mt Isa Cup run, ironically won by Strebor Luck trained by the Carringtons. Alinta would become the dam of handy Albion Park gallopers Rarely Seen and Mission To Mars. "Neil had told me Barry and Sharon Morris had a bitch that might be for sale for $2000," said Glenn. "It was Whispering Honey." Ironically she was the same bitch that Glenn's long-time mate Bob Nicholls had mentioned to him as a "black book special" around Albion Park. Bob and Glenn have been great mates for many, many years. "I worked with Bob in the mines and he's always been a great dog punter," said Glenn. "Bob was also mates with dog man Barry Elliott. Barry could not read, so in a bid to help Barry with his dog breeding, training etc, Bob would read every book, article, you name it, on greyhounds to Barry." And while Bob was educating Barry, he was doing exactly the same for himself. Bob, now 60 and living at the Gold Coast, quickly became greyhound racing advisor to Glenn and Pat. "He was always telling me to get a good bitch, a bitch we could breed with," said Glenn. When the "black booker" Whispering Honey came along, Glenn and Pat decided to buy. "I told Neil to offer the Morrises $1000 for her and they took it." The move north was just what Whispering Honey needed. "She was a wide runner and drew box eight seven times in a row," said Glenn. In all she won 15 races for the Carringtons. Her crowning glory was a flashing second to Mr Footprints in the Townsville Cup. GLENN and Pat Carrington and grandson Mitchell with Whispering Honey and Oreo. Honey proves Glenn, Pat and their mate Nicko were right all along heat of the Cairns Cup. But when it came to breed with Whispering Honey, "manager" Bob Nicholls reckoned she was borderline for broodbitch potential. By this time the Carringtons were racing a brilliant bitch called Oreo (Token Prince- Northern Wish) who swept to a sensational 34.57 Albion Park 600m track record and was second to Fool's State in the Ipswich Auction final. When Bob did his homework for a mate for Whispering Honey he came up with only Surf Lorian. "He told me I had to go to Surf Lorian, so I went out and bought a straw just after he had come off the track," said Glenn. "I reckon I was the first one in <strong>Queensland</strong> to get a straw." The result is a fabulous litter which includes Group 2 Futurity winner Honey Mist and her flying litter sister Hustler's Honey, as well as Honeysuckle Rose, Have You Heard and Penthouse Pet all winners. "Honey Mist was the first of the progeny of Surf Lorian to win in <strong>Queensland</strong>," said Glenn. "Nicko" is already looking at prospective mates for Honey Mist and Hustler's Honey when they go to stud. "He's got a five-year plan for us to produce a champion front running stayer," said Glenn. He has insisted the Carringtons go back to Surf Lorian with Whispering Honey and that they have done. Pat, 61, and Glenn, 60, have been in greyhound racing for 37 years. They bought their first dog from Tony Duke and called her Mosswyn Queen. "She did nothing. "When we bought our first greyhound, we had never seen one in real life, just pictures of them," said Pat. They got bitten by the greyhound bug pretty quickly and just as quickly got hold of some handy Mt Isa dogs. Royal Frolic was a prolific winner as was Greta Ling. Pat admits a Royal Frolic win at Mt Isa was as exciting as it was successful. "I had never had a bet in my life," said Glenn Carrington appreciated the victory of Honey Mist more than most will know. For Glenn has been doing it a bit tough in the past decade. He's had two bouts of cancer, a kidney out, half his pancreas out, half a liver is gone, his spleen has been removed, and now he could lose half of the remaining kidney. Pat. "I didn't even know how to bet. But I scraped up $200 and had on her at 9-2. There were 14 bookies fielding on Mt Isa dogs in those days but I had to get someone to put the money on for me. "I was so excited I didn't tell Glenn I had bet, or won, for three months. I kept the money stuffed in a toilet roll holder." Pat has never had another bet. By 2001 with Mt Isa closing down as a greyhound racing venue, the Carringtons packed up and moved to Townsville where they have continued to win race after race. Only this year they bought acreage at Haigslea and are in the process of establishing a new greyhound complex. Oreo was an impulse buy for Glenn. "I turned up at the sale and spotted a Token Prince bitch out of Northern Wish. It went through the sale for $1500. "A few minutes later another one went for the same money. It was a nice type as well. I spotted another one coming up not long after and it was a nice black bitch. I got her for $1200." It was Oreo. "Pat wouldn't even let me bring her home," said Glenn. "I sent her to Merv Page to rear and got her up to Townsville at 12 months." The rest is history. Nicko advised Glenn to send both Whispering Honey and Oreo to Surf Lorian for their first matings. "He does the videos on all the races and advised us that we had to use Surf Lorian because of his great final sections. "A couple of big name stud dogs he ruled out because they could not get to the line as strong as he thought they should. "Nicko reckons those stud dogs will not sire strength into their progeny." It was also Nicko who advised the Carringtons to send Honey Mist and Hustler's Honey to Brisbane to race, under the training of Tony Brett. Nicko's been right all the way along. The Carringtons have been happy to let their "manager" take charge. She was on her way to the start for the Group 2 Ipswich Auction final. At the end of the lead was her extra smart bitch Oreo. "I was lined up on the track and about to move off to the dais for the pre-race presentation, when a little boy came up to the outside rail," said Pat. "That's Oreo," said the little boy. "That's a black biscuit. Are you going to eat her?" Pat broke out laughing. "I remember Steve Scott was next to me in the line-up and he started laughing as well. Pat hasn't forgotten that little boy and his concern for Oreo. "I thought at the time, that's a great name for a dog ut of Oreo," said Pat. And that's what has happened. Pat and husband Glenn have named a Surf Lorian-Oreo black bitch by just that name, Black Biscuit. And Black Biscuit can run.
