Room temperature is best
NORMALLY it is best to maintain room temperature to between 35-36 degrees for the
first week of whelping because up until a week of age puppies are unable to regulate their own
body temperature.
It is important to provide bedding for the pups to burrow into to cover themselves and
sleep together to reduce heat loss.
Heat lamps are often too intense and focus heat onto puppies that are unable to regulate
their body temperatures.
A warm water bottle at a lukewarm temperature (40 degrees celsius) placed into the bed
will also help to keep puppies warm with regular changes during cold weather.
The other alternative is to provide a thermostatically controlled oil column heater to keep
the whelping area warm and cosy but not too hot.
