Home-bred Man proves
star at Albion Park
THE term "home-bred" might sound
a tad derogatory to some but He's The
Man has proved how successful some
greyhound breeders can be by using
their own stock.
He's The Man (Elly's Star-No Fake)
is a real home-bred, Darwin bred to be
exact, by leading Northern Territory
greyhound man Mick Emery.
The dog was a top flight galloper in
the north before Mick contacted Glenn
Stephan and his dad Owen to give him a
try around Brisbane.
After some initial concerns about
settling in, He's The Man has since
proven himself with a smart Albion Park
victory.
So just what has gone into producing
He's The Man?
Mick Emery, 52, bred the sire Elly's
Star. His fourth dam was the famous
Viola Lee, dam of classic winner Tegimi
and his top flight brother Big Pinch, and
a full sister to legend Temlee.
Amazingly Violalin, the third dam of
Elly's Star was by Tempix, a son of
Temlee, out of Viola Lee a full sister to
Temlee.
"Elly's Star was a very good
galloper," said Emery. "I bred him in
Darwin and he showed so much potential
I sent him to race in Brisbane."

Mick Emery is moving
to Queensland later in
the year.
At his third race starts Elly's Star
won at Albion Park but fractured a
hock. He won a few more races but never
reached the heights Mick knew he would
if sound.
"I bred two litters to him, the other to
a Darwin bitch but they were no good,"
said Mick.
No Fake is from the famous
Queensland damline tracing to Tardy
Angel which boasted Group 1 winners
Faithful Hawk, Tar Dinn and Pretty
Tardy.
"Tony Whitehouse had No Fake in
Darwin," said Emery. "She was a
shortcourser who won 20 races for
Tony."
When No Fake finished racing, she
and Elly's Star combined to produce
He's The Man.
Mick Emery knows only too well now
what it takes to win at Albion Park. And
he is backing his judgment by packing
up his family and greyhounds and
moving to Atkinsons Dam.
"I've just bought Ces Perry's 40-acre
property at Atkinsons Dam and will be
moving there by September or October,"
he said.
Emery will not bring race dogs from
Darwin, but has more than 40 pups by
such sires as Most Awesome, Surf
Lorian, King's Cadet, Addis Boy, Black
Enforcer and Valentia Citrate. The

and 2KY Standing stood Paul down at ... for a week for
his outburst.

broadcasting boxes at Wentworth Park
which are carpeted, air-conditioned and

oldest are 17 months, the youngest just
five.
"And I've got some really well bred
broodbitches including a litter sister to
Ace Boy," he said.
It will take at least two but possibly
three trips to bring everything south.
"I'll be coming down in the meantime to
do a few things around the new
property," said Mick.
He has two fully air-conditioned
trailers in which to transport the dogs,
one an eight-berth, the other for four
dogs.
He wants to train but also
commercially rear pups.
Mick and wife Jenny have been in
greyhound racing for 30 years.
"I won 50 races in Darwin last year,"
he said.
