Technical ceramics
Ceramics date back to antiquity. They
are, perhaps, the first man-made material,
dating back to the Mesolithic and
Neolithic periods. Several countries are
fighting for the right to be recognised
as the birthplace of ceramics. From the
look of it, humanity has never been able
to pinpoint where and when the ancient
craftsmen started to produce small flat
plates and jewellery out of clay. Only
fragments of various compositions have
survived to this day, indicating the high
levels to which the craftsmen of past
centuries resigned themselves. Even today,
exclusive collections of ceramics
strike the imagination with their sophistication,
an example of the high level of
proficiency of the age.
B
efore industrial methods were developed,
all production was completed by hand or
with the aid of simple tools. The era of
mass production only came into being with the
advent of specialist equipment and machinery,
making the product increasingly more affordable
and significantly enhancing its popularity.
Today factories exist in almost every country,
producing all types of ceramics.
New processing methods, the invention of
precision machinery and specialist treatments
enabled products of different shapes, sizes and
thicknesses to be manufactured. In addition,
the introduction of particular compounds into
the raw materials’ composition gave the ceramic
new properties: an increased resistance to
extreme temperature conditions, moisture and
certain types of chemical environments. These
advances transformed ceramic into a widely
used material. Manufacturers of ceramic
products discover new possibilities for this traditional
material every year and show the latest
innovations in ceramic production and products
at the specialised MosBuild Cersanex event,
which incorporates the specialised exhibition
sections Ceramica and Technoceramica. The
different types of sector products on show at
the exhibition are: raw materials and materials;
household ceramics (crockery, sanitary products
and appliances etc); technical ceramics, i.e.
the development of new ceramics technology
(heatproof plates, biomedical products, missile
radomes etc); ceramics manufacturing equipment
(kilns, gas and testing equipment etc).
