Marine Outboard Motors<br />

Learn to repair outboard motors. Course<br />

includes basic operating principles, procedures<br />

for tune-ups, water pumps and winterizing<br />

your motor. Covers 2 and 4 stroke theory,<br />

inboard and outboard engines.<br />

Marine Stern Drive<br />

Study the theory of operation, basic<br />

maintenance, water pumps and winterizing<br />

procedures, practical problems, advance<br />

tear-down, rebuilding of outdrive, and engine<br />

troubleshooting.<br />

Marine Technical Specialist<br />

Get prepared for employment opportunities in boat yards, marinas, and engine repair<br />

facilities. Courses meet two nights/week (one for theory, one for lab work). Tech offers<br />

two program levels. Successfully completing both programs completes your technical<br />

education and may lead to increased salary opportunities. A basic set of hand tools,<br />

multi-meter and diagnostic tools are the student’s responsibility. A supply list will be<br />

provided per module and is available at www.wilsontech.org/marine.<br />

All classes meet at Manor Plains campus, room 211/215.<br />

Marine Operators Certificate:<br />

Complete the six classes for this program in<br />

nine months. Graduates can obtain valuable<br />

industry-recognized certificates attesting to<br />

their skills including Apprenticeship Boat<br />

Bottom Painting Certificate and Forklift/<br />

Strap Lift Certificate. Cost of tools for Part<br />

I is approximately $1,000.<br />

All classes are 12 sessions.<br />

Marina Operations: Module I<br />

This class is a MUST for anyone entering or<br />

currently working in the marine industry.<br />

Learn excellent customer service skills, how<br />

to be a service writer and gain an overview<br />

of the marina as a business. Students will<br />

earn their Apprentice Boat Bottom Painting<br />

and Forklift/Strap certificates.<br />

Engine Technology I: Module II<br />

This module covers the theory of two and<br />

four stroke internal combustion engines<br />

for both outboard and inboard engines<br />

with modern computer engine controls.<br />

Cooling systems will also be covered.<br />

Boatyard Operations/Internship<br />

Final module for Part 1. Spend 80 hours<br />

at a local boat yard or marina to practice<br />

hauling and launching, blocking, bottom<br />

painting, fork and travel lift training.<br />

vary, no classroom meeting.<br />

Marine Technology Certificate:<br />

(Prerequisite: Marine Operators Certificate<br />

or marine trade experience)<br />

Take six classes for this second certificate<br />

program which can be completed in nine<br />

months to gain additional expertise. The<br />

program will help prepare you to take the<br />

certification tests, which will be given at<br />

the end of the classes, from these engine<br />

manufacturers: Yamaha, Evinrude and/<br />

or Mercury. To enhance employment<br />

opportunities, successful graduates of the<br />

program will be well-positioned to seek<br />

additional certifications from the American<br />

Boat & Yachting Council or the National<br />

Marine Electronics Association. The<br />

instructor will provide information about<br />

the additional preparation required for<br />

these certifications. Cost of tools for Part<br />

II is approximately $1000.<br />

Ignition Systems: Module I<br />

Gain in-depth information on how modern<br />

ignitions systems work. Learn electronic<br />

ignition theory including capacitor<br />

discharge ignition (CDI) and how to<br />

troubleshoot using state-of-the-art test<br />

equipment.<br />

Electronic Fuel Injection: Module II<br />

Gain a thorough understanding of<br />

computerized electronic and direct injection<br />

engine operating systems. Heavy emphasis<br />

will be placed on hands-on computer<br />

diagnostic operations.<br />
