Medical Assisting<br />
Prepare to work in physicians’ offices,<br />
hospitals and clinics. Duties include<br />
running the front office, receptionist<br />
functions, bookkeeping, and filing.<br />
Assist the physician with examinations and<br />
treatments, medications, perform EKG’s and<br />
simple laboratory procedures. Study topics<br />
including hematology, urinalysis, phlebotomy,<br />
basic blood banking, and routinely performed<br />
chemistry tests. Daytime clinical experience<br />
provided in local medical offices and clinics.<br />
Those who successfully complete this program<br />
are eligible to sit for two national certification<br />
exams–Medical Assisting and Phlebotomy.<br />
Testing fees separate. Prerequisites: basic<br />
computer skills and successful score on TABE<br />
test. Additional costs (approx. $550) for uniform,<br />
physical exam and textbooks (www.wilsontech.<br />
org/bookstore) as well as review books and<br />
practice exams (NCCT Customer Service at<br />
1-800-875-4404 or www.ncctinc.com). Note:<br />
High school diploma or equivalent is required<br />

completed by the first class. Fee of $115 payable<br />

Physical Therapy Aide<br />
Help patients recover from injuries,<br />
improve their mobility, resume<br />
work and enjoy life again. Gain<br />
the knowledge and skills to assist medical<br />
professionals and therapists in offices, clinics,<br />
hospitals, and long-term care facilities. Learn<br />
how to set up and maintain treatment areas,<br />
prepare equipment and assist patients in<br />
therapy. Topics: customer service, workplace<br />
safety, common physical disorders, physical<br />
therapy treatments and exercise, mobility<br />
training, and CPR. Field trips to local physical<br />
therapy office during the day will highlight<br />
classroom theory and laboratory practice.<br />

Step #1 TABE Test<br />
Students MUST satisfactorily pass this Test of<br />
Adult Basic Education (TABE) before enrolling<br />
in Medical Assisting, Nurse Assisting, Medical<br />
Office Coding & Billing Specialist, PT Aide<br />
or Auto Tech. The test covers basic math<br />
computation and reading comprehension.<br />
The TABE test can only be taken once in a<br />
6-month period. All TABE Tests ($25) given at<br />
DH-A, Career Center. Call Career Center<br />
(631) 667-6000 x327 to schedule an<br />
appointment with a counselor and to schedule<br />
your TABE test.<br />
Step #2 Basic Skills Class<br />
Based on the results of your TABE Test, you<br />
will be advised either to take this Basic Skills<br />
class or enroll in your program. Your success<br />
in any of the four programs will depend on<br />
your ability to compute basic math problems<br />
and understand textbooks and written<br />
directions. This class will help you boost<br />
both your English and math skills. Successful<br />
completion of this course qualifies you to<br />
retake (once) the TABE Test given on the last<br />
night of class.<br />
