A Model for the

Certification (GL) issued the accredited
ISO 50001 certification for the Rickmers offices
in Hamburg and Singapore, as well as
for ten ships from their fleet. The handover
<strong>to</strong>ok place at the Rickmers’ head office in
Hamburg last January. All audits were completed
successfully by GL audi<strong>to</strong>rs in 2012,
with plans in place <strong>to</strong> add nine more ships
in early 2013.
ISO 50001 is a voluntary international
standard that gives companies a framework
for developing targets and implementing
policies with the aim of improving energy
efficiency, quality of services and reduction
in emissions. The successful implementation
of the ISO 50001 standard within a period
of just six months underlines the support
and commitment from Rickmers’ <strong>to</strong>p management
<strong>to</strong> energy efficiency. “In shipping
<strong>to</strong>day, making more efficient use of energy
is not only a key fac<strong>to</strong>r in a company’s strategy
<strong>to</strong> reduce its impact on the environment
but an essential part of remaining competitive
and reducing bunker costs substantially,”
said Björn Sprotte, Rickmers’ Global
Head of Maritime Services.

Condition Moni<strong>to</strong>ring Survey Arrangement for Engine Pis<strong>to</strong>ns
German shipping company NSC Schifffahrtsgesellschaft
has decided <strong>to</strong> implement
a Condition Moni<strong>to</strong>ring (CM) survey
arrangement on the main diesel engine
pis<strong>to</strong>ns of 49 GL-classed vessels of its fleet.

“The prevention of unnecessary openup
inspections and surveys is one of the
significant benefits of the CM survey arrangement,”
says Dr Jörg Rebel, GL condition
moni<strong>to</strong>ring expert. “Open-up inspections
and surveys are
costly and time-consuming,
especially in the case of
pis<strong>to</strong>n overhauls for large
diesel engines. Dismantling
and re-assembling of the
engines ways holds the risk
of damaging a system that is running
well.” GL offers the CM survey arrangement
for crank-train bearings and pis<strong>to</strong>ns
of two-stroke diesel engines, as well as
for rotating auxiliary machinery, such as
centrifugal pumps, electric mo<strong>to</strong>rs, fans
and purifiers.
