Your home Housing development offers hope for overcrowded families before after This vacant doctor’s surgery is now family homes for residents How the housing on Seven Sisters Road looks now An unloved corner of Islington has been turned into much-needed new family homes. An empty doctor’s surgery on Seven Sisters Road has been redeveloped by the council and Keepmoat to provide six new family homes. Overcrowded Islington residents - including those on the neighbouring Andover Estate - will receive priority in the bidding thanks to Islington Council’s local lettings policy. Cllr James Murray, executive member for housing, said: “We are desperately short of affordable family homes in Islington, and we’re such a small borough we don’t have much space to build on, so coming up with innovative ideas – like this one to transform empty buildings – is essential. “The new development at Seven Sisters Road provides high quality accommodation for nearly thirty people at an affordable rent.” Salvaging recycled items saves money Staff from Islington Council and housing contractors, Hyde and Rydon undertook a large recycling operation last month to salvage materials from the demolition site at Packington Square (pictured right). Items worth £250,000 will be put to good use on various estates throughout the borough that need replacement or will be welcomed for use in community projects. The demolition works carried out on the site were part of Phase 3 of the regeneration of the estate which will see more apartments built, a new square created, and large six-bed family houses for local families. Theresa Coyle (Residents' Champion) Susanne Lamido (Residents' Vice Champion) Peter Owen (Residents' Vice Champion) For more information on the housing executive and residents' champion roles visit www.islington.gov.uk/ housingelections representative: Liana Sparks Residents who helped transform Forrest Court gardens Forrest Court flourishes thanks to gardening club The courtyard and garden at Forrest Court estate on Liverpool Road have been transformed thanks to the hard work of green-fingered residents. With the help of grants from Islington Voluntary Action Council and the Edible Islington scheme, a lawn has been developed, plants bought, and a water feature and arch installed. A rarely used tarmac play area has also been converted into a vegetable garden, with the produce shared amongst the residents. An agreement has now been set up between the council and the residents to continue to maintain the garden. This means that the gardening club receives money to look after the garden, instead of a contractor. Resident and Gardening Club member, Richard Evans is delighted with the arrangement and said: “The money we will now get is a lifeline to us and will allow further improvements and see the garden remain well kept for the benefit of all the residents.” 13
