Stand for your community
Women who live or work in Islington
are being invited to take an active role
in local democracy and find out about
becoming a local councillor.
‘Stand for Your Community, Be a
Councillor’ is a free, informal event
that will take place at the Town Hall on
Monday 22 October, 3.30-6pm.
The event will be a great opportunity
to:
learn more about how councillors
can influence decisions that affect
the community
hear from inspirational women in
local government
find out how to get involved.
There will also be sessions on
tackling practical issues like balancing
council duties with family life.
Rakhia Ismail became an Islington
councillor in May this year after several
years running community projects for
refugees and being involved in a local
political party. She said:
“It was many different issues that led
to me becoming a councillor. I realised
that unless I put myself forward,
decisions would be made that I couldn’t
be a part of.
“I would definitely encourage
women, regardless of background, to
get involved in the community and
stand for election.
“We need strong local communities
where people can empower one
another.”
