Paul and Alex provide advice about supported<br />
volunteering at a local community centre<br />
New volunteering project<br />
Local residents Paul Grant and Alex Vimalanathan have<br />
been volunteering at Voluntary Action <strong>Islington</strong> (VAI) for<br />
several months, helping local people to find volunteering<br />
opportunities.<br />
Recently they developed a specialised project to support<br />
people experiencing barriers to socialising in the local<br />
community to play a more active role through volunteering.<br />
Last summer Paul was awarded a Paralympic table tennis<br />
ticket through the council’s Community Heroes scheme in<br />
recognition of his work. Paul said:<br />
“Seeing so many athletes push themselves to their<br />
maximum potential regardless of their impairments<br />
was incredible to see. The standard of table tennis was<br />
phenomenal and so was the atmosphere at the Excel Arena.<br />
“I really enjoyed myself and think the Community Heroes<br />
scheme is a great idea.”<br />
The supported volunteering project, despite being new,<br />
has already received the support of residents. One user<br />
said:<br />
“I have found the service extremely helpful. Not only did<br />
it provide me with my original requirements, but when I<br />
sought alternatives, these were also provided ... now I have<br />
the possibility to volunteer at another organisation.”<br />

A million minutes of creativity<br />
The Million Minutes project is bringing two years of exciting<br />
creative activity to Finsbury Park and Archway.<br />
Led by <strong>Islington</strong> <strong>Council</strong> and supported by Arts <strong>Council</strong><br />
England, the first project is already underway and involves<br />
six artists developing artworks with the local community in<br />
locations such as a charity shop and a day centre.<br />
The creations will be shared and the Million Minutes<br />
projects and events will be documented and promoted at<br />
www.amillionminutes.org<br />
Junction Ward<br />

Junction Ward covers Upper<br />
Holloway and Archway in<br />
the north of the borough.<br />
Approximately 12,100 people<br />
live in Junction Ward and this<br />
accounts for around 6% of<br />
