IslingtonLife Spring 2012
Paul and Alex provide advice about supported
volunteering at a local community centre
New volunteering project
Local residents Paul Grant and Alex Vimalanathan have
been volunteering at Voluntary Action Islington (VAI) for
several months, helping local people to find volunteering
opportunities.
Recently they developed a specialised project to support
people experiencing barriers to socialising in the local
community to play a more active role through volunteering.
Last summer Paul was awarded a Paralympic table tennis
ticket through the council’s Community Heroes scheme in
recognition of his work. Paul said:
“Seeing so many athletes push themselves to their
maximum potential regardless of their impairments
was incredible to see. The standard of table tennis was
phenomenal and so was the atmosphere at the Excel Arena.
“I really enjoyed myself and think the Community Heroes
scheme is a great idea.”
The supported volunteering project, despite being new,
has already received the support of residents. One user
said:
“I have found the service extremely helpful. Not only did
it provide me with my original requirements, but when I
sought alternatives, these were also provided ... now I have
the possibility to volunteer at another organisation.”
A million minutes of creativity
The Million Minutes project is bringing two years of exciting
creative activity to Finsbury Park and Archway.
Led by Islington Council and supported by Arts Council
England, the first project is already underway and involves
six artists developing artworks with the local community in
locations such as a charity shop and a day centre.
The creations will be shared and the Million Minutes
projects and events will be documented and promoted at
