GCSE results this summer. Students
at Islington’s sixth forms achieved a
99 per cent pass rate in their A-level
results.

Careers advice for young people
Young people are invited to attend
Skills London 2012 - London’s
biggest careers and skills event - on
23 and 24 November at the ExCel
centre in Docklands.
The event is free and a great
opportunity to find out everything
you need to know about careers,
training and skills.
Two of Islington’s secondary schools
are set to open brand new buildings in
November.
Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and
Islington Arts and Media School are
about to unveil their new facilities,
delivered under Islington's Building
Schools for the Future programme.

Secondary schools get a makeover
which has transformed Highbury
Grove, Holloway School and St Aloysius’
College.
Among the new facilities available
to pupils at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson
will be a new sports hall, library, drama
studios and an arts and technology
block. Islington Arts and Media School
is about to open a new theatre and arts
and music rooms.

“It has been a busy
time for the youth council – we
have been developing our roles and
working on understanding how we
can influence council work.
“We have been helping with the
development of a new app izzyinfo
which promotes services and
events for young people.
“Y Cllrs Miriam and Chloe have
been giving their ideas on how to
reduce youth unemployment -
work experience, earlier focus on
careers and more careers advice in
schools. Y Cllr Benjamin is working
with the community safety team
on a new project - the Youth
Initiative Grant - where young
people can bid for small grants
to run their own projects and
activities.
“On top of all this serious work,
we have also had a summer of fun!
We attended a variety of events
including the Olympic Torch Relay
where we met David Walliams.
We were pleased to see so many
fun and useful activities going on
and we are working with Islington
Council to improve and develop
positive activities for young people
so that they are even better.”

Meanwhile, Highbury Fields School is
undergoing improvements to both its
Highbury Hill and Aberdeen Park sites,
which will be completed next year.
The programme aimed at improving
the borough’s secondary schools has
seen around £130 million invested in
facilities for students and coincided
with an upward trend in GCSE
achievement in Islington.
