Focus on… The Rose Bowl<br />

The Rose Bowl centre in Canonbury offers a<br />

varied programme of arts, sports and media<br />

to children and young people aged from<br />

eight to 19.<br />

Having gone from strength to strength<br />

since reopening in April 2011, the centre<br />

is now open Tuesday to Thursday and<br />

Saturdays.<br />

Working with a host of professional<br />

partner organisations, this autumn young<br />

people can choose from art, puppet making,<br />

girl’s football, boxing, film-making, circus<br />

skills, and much more.<br />

Free fluoride treatment for children<br />

Tooth decay is very common in<br />

children in <strong>Islington</strong>, causing pain and<br />

long term dental problems.<br />

Fluoride varnish treatment is free<br />

and a safe way of protecting your<br />

child’s teeth from decay.<br />

<strong>Islington</strong> has a free fluoride varnish<br />

scheme for children aged from three<br />

to ten years running in many of the<br />

borough’s children’s centres and<br />

primary schools.<br />

Children’s Centre<br />

Packington Children’s<br />

Centre in N1 has been<br />

rated as ‘outstanding’ in<br />

every category by Ofsted<br />

inspectors. In their report,<br />

Ofsted noted that the<br />

centre is run by a team<br />

with extremely high morale,<br />

‘motivated and inspired<br />

by their highly effective<br />

management’.<br />

Centre operates over<br />

a number of sites, with<br />

childcare and education<br />

services from Popham Road,<br />

There are 16 children’s<br />

centres across <strong>Islington</strong>,<br />

offering care and education<br />

for children aged under five,<br />

and a range of services and<br />

activities for parents and<br />

Free school meals<br />

boost learning<br />

Recent research has<br />

found that eating a<br />

healthy free school<br />

meal can boost academic<br />

achievement.<br />

<strong>Islington</strong> <strong>Council</strong> offers<br />

free school meals to all children in the borough’s<br />

primary schools – one of only a handful of councils<br />

to do this.<br />

Eligible secondary school pupils can also<br />

receive a free school meal.<br />

To take advantage you must register. Pick up a<br />

form from your child’s school or download one from<br />

www.islington.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals<br />

By taking up a free school meal you could:<br />

✓ save up to £360 a year on lunch costs<br />

✓ raise additional money for your child’s school<br />

✓ give your child access to healthy and nutritious<br />

meals.<br />
