Oral Hygiene and Oral Health<br />

Knowledge among 12-15 Year-Old<br />

School children in Al-Karak - Jordan<br />

Objectives: To evaluate oral hygiene and<br />

gingival status among 12-15 year old<br />

schoolchildren in Al karak governorate/<br />

Southern Jordan.<br />

Methods: A cross sectional study was<br />

conducted among 730 pupils in the 12-15<br />

year old age group.<br />

Of those, 263 (36%) were males and<br />

467 (64%) females in their Sixth,<br />

Seventh, Eighth as well as Ninth grades.<br />

All participants were examined for oral<br />

hygiene and gingival condition, using the<br />

Silness and Löe Plaque Index (PI), and the<br />

Löe and Silness Gingival Index (GI).<br />

Results: The mean Plaque Index for the<br />

total study group was 1.33. For males,<br />

the mean Plaque Index was 1.38 while for<br />

females it was 1.30. The difference was<br />

statistically non-significant, (p=0.126). The<br />

mean Gingival Index for the total study<br />

group was 1.40. While males scored1.55<br />

mean Gingival Index, females scored 1.32.<br />
