Basic playback This section explains basic operations for playback of DVDs, VCDs, SVCDs, and Audio CDs. For MP3 playback, see page 55. For JPEG disc playback, see page 57. • DVD VIDEO SUPER AUDIO CD VCD CD shows the types of discs the operation is available for. • Before operating the DVD player from the remote control, press DVD to use the remote control for the disc operations. • Turn on your TV and select the correct input mode on the TV. IMPORTANT: When using the remote control, check to see if its remote control mode selector is set to the correct position: Set it to “DVD” to use other than RDS. DVD RDS Preventing screen burn-out with the screen saver A TV screen may be burned out if a static picture is displayed for a long time. To prevent this, the system automatically dims the screen if a static picture is displayed for over 5 minutes (the screen saver function). • Pressing any button will cancel the screen saver function. • If you do not want to use the screen saver function, see page 62. On-screen guide icons During DVD playback, the following guide icons may appear for a while on the TV screen: • : appears at the beginning of a scene containing multi-subtitle languages. • : appears at the beginning of a scene containing multi-audio languages. • : appears at the beginning of a scene containing multi-angle views. • (Play), (Pause), / (Fast forward/backward), / (Slow-motion forward/backward): appears when you perform each operation. • If “ ” appears on the TV screen when pressing a button, the disc cannot accept an operation you have tried to do, or information required for that operation is not recorded on the disc. NOTES: • In some cases, without showing “ ,” operations will not be accepted. • If you do not want the on-screen guide icons to appear, see page 66. 2 Insert a disc into the disc slot with the label side facing the front or up as shown below. After the system reads the disc information, playback starts. To remove a disc Press 0 again. The disc comes out from the disc slot. “EJECT” appears on the display window and on the TV screen. NOTE: When the center unit is placed vertically When AM, FM, AUX, or AUX DIGITAL is selected as the source, if the indication as illustrated below appears on the display window, a disc is already inserted. Press 0 to remove the disc before inserting another disc. Example: When “AUX” is selected. L R This indication shows that a disc is inserted. NOTES: • With Video CDs/SVCDs with PBC function (see page 7), or some DVD Video discs, the menu display may appear on the TV screen after starting playback. In such a case, select an item to be played back from the menu. See page 43. • When the system is in standby mode, pressing 0 also turns on the system. • The stored position for the resume playback is canceled when removing a disc. • You can check the playback information on the display window and the TV screen (see page 41). Playback information on the display window While loading and playing a disc, the current title/chapter/track numbers, time, and status information appear on the display window. See page 42. • You can also check the playback information on the TV screen. See page 41. • The current disc type information appears as follows: – “VCD”: shows a VCD or SVCD is loaded. – “CD”: shows an Audio CD is loaded. • When a Video CD or SVCD with PBC function is played, the time information does not appear, but “PBC” appears. Stopping playback temporarily From the remote control: Press PAUSE. On the center unit: Press 8. DVD VIDEO CD SUPER VCD AUDIO CD To return to normal playback, Press PLAY (or 3 on the center unit). 28
