The
Annual
Fund
1
The Annual Fund, which was established in 1990, is
administered by the University of Kent Development Trust
and is built by contributions from alumni, parents and
other friends of the University. It has helped with many
student projects — from scholarships to new projectors
for Cinema 3, from equipment for students with
disabilities and resources for the library to start-up
funding for the Student Union JobShop, and much more.
The Annual Fund is made up primarily of unrestricted gifts
to assist projects that are likely to have the greatest lasting
impact on student life at Kent now. In making positive
changes for current students, gifts can be directed towards
scholarships, University facilities or areas of greatest need.
The Fund provides opportunities and makes a real difference
for students.Without your support, this would not be possible.
The trustees include Vice-Chancellor Professor David
Melville, Chancellor Sir Robert Worcester, University
Treasurer Cllr John Simmonds, Karen Doyle, Acting Director
of Development and Alumni, Margot Chaundler R67,
Rhonda Smith R68, Charlotte Green E75 and William Bruty
K79. Karen Goffin R86, Head of Central Secretariat, acts as
Secretary.
In December, members of the Development Trust met to
consider applications for the year. They were able to award
a further alumni postgraduate scholarship, and grants for:
• Innov8, a student enterprise project
• Kent Union, for One World Week
• Kent Union, to enable an online version of the student
newspaper, InQuire
• Anthropology, to create an Ethnobotanical Garden,
designed by Anthropology alumnus and Chelsea Flower
Show award winner James Wong (E04)
• Archaeology, to enable the cataloguing of two valuable
archaeological collections the University recently received
– those of Sir Colin Renfrew and Professor Snodgrass.
One World Week
The Kent Union Student Activities department provides sports,
societies, student media, volunteering, campaigning and
representation opportunities to students at the University. The
Union currently operates 100 student societies and 40 sports
clubs. One World Week is a major student event and is a
celebration of diversity and internationalism. International student
societies play an important part in the week. They run and
support events such as a global market and fashion show. The
culmination of the week is International Night, a ticketed event,
which showcases the talents of the international students who
make the University their home. Acts ranging from singers and
percussionists to the now-famous Japanese Fisherman’s Dance all
serve to make the night one of the highlights of the University
calendar. The students all perform their acts for free and dozens of
students volunteer their time to run the event. The grant from the
Annual Fund helped with hiring space, equipment, staging and
lighting and kept the ticket costs low so that more students could
enjoy International Night. Kent Union is extremely grateful to the
Annual Fund for helping to make the event such a huge success.
Recognition for student volunteers
Many students volunteer their time to projects at Kent, whether it
be through helping in local schools or nursing homes, running a
society, raising money for charity, acting as a course representative,
working on the radio station, or writing for the student newspaper.
Student volunteers make a valued contribution not just to the life
of the University, but also to the community.
