The
Annual
Fund
1
The Annual Fund, which was established in 1990, is
administered by the University of Kent Development Trust
and is built by contributions from alumni, parents and
other friends of the University. It has helped with many
student projects — from scholarships to new projectors
for Cinema 3, from equipment for students with
disabilities and resources for the library to start-up
funding for the Student Union JobShop, and much more.
The Annual Fund is made up primarily of unrestricted gifts
to assist projects that are likely to have the greatest lasting
impact on student life at Kent now. In making positive
changes for current students, gifts can be directed towards
scholarships, University facilities or areas of greatest need.
The Fund provides opportunities and makes a real difference
for students.Without your support, this would not be possible.
The trustees include Vice-Chancellor Professor David
Melville, Chancellor Sir Robert Worcester, University
Treasurer Cllr John Simmonds, Karen Doyle, Acting Director
of Development and Alumni, Margot Chaundler R67,
Rhonda Smith R68, Charlotte Green E75 and William Bruty
K79. Karen Goffin R86, Head of Central Secretariat, acts as
Secretary.
In December, members of the Development Trust met to
consider applications for the year. They were able to award
a further alumni postgraduate scholarship, and grants for:
• Innov8, a student enterprise project
• Kent Union, for One World Week
• Kent Union, to enable an online version of the student
newspaper, InQuire
• Anthropology, to create an Ethnobotanical Garden,
designed by Anthropology alumnus and Chelsea Flower
Show award winner James Wong (E04)
• Archaeology, to enable the cataloguing of two valuable
archaeological collections the University recently received
– those of Sir Colin Renfrew and Professor Snodgrass.
One World Week
The Kent Union Student Activities department provides sports,
societies, student media, volunteering, campaigning and
representation opportunities to students at the University. The
Union currently operates 100 student societies and 40 sports
clubs. One World Week is a major student event and is a
celebration of diversity and internationalism. International student
societies play an important part in the week. They run and
support events such as a global market and fashion show. The
culmination of the week is International Night, a ticketed event,
which showcases the talents of the international students who
make the University their home. Acts ranging from singers and
percussionists to the now-famous Japanese Fisherman’s Dance all
serve to make the night one of the highlights of the University
calendar. The students all perform their acts for free and dozens of
students volunteer their time to run the event. The grant from the
Annual Fund helped with hiring space, equipment, staging and
lighting and kept the ticket costs low so that more students could
enjoy International Night. Kent Union is extremely grateful to the
Annual Fund for helping to make the event such a huge success.
Recognition for student volunteers
Many students volunteer their time to projects at Kent, whether it
be through helping in local schools or nursing homes, running a
society, raising money for charity, acting as a course representative,
working on the radio station, or writing for the student newspaper.
Student volunteers make a valued contribution not just to the life
of the University, but also to the community.
Thanks in part to a grant from the University’s Annual Fund, Kent
Union (KU) was able to better recognise and celebrate the work
of student volunteers. A special awards evening was held in the
Gulbenkian Theatre. The volunteers were treated to an evening of
performances from various student societies and award winners
received custom-made trophies. In January, Kent Union became
the first students’ union in the UK to achieve Investing in
Volunteers status from Volunteering England. Assessed against a
range of best practice standards, KU excelled in all aspects of
working with and supporting its student volunteers.
Building the new Kent print collection
An award of £2,000 from the Annual Fund enabled the purchase
of prints that were immediately put to use in teaching History &
Philosophy of Art.
The Kent Print Collection was established in the summer of 2005
with the acquisition of 14 prints by leading figures in the history
of printmaking, each of which are representative of different
periods and styles of European art and of the different techniques
of printmaking. The featured printmakers include Albrecht Dürer
(1471-1528), Agostino Carracci (1557-1602), William Hogarth
(1697-1764),Thomas Burke (1749-1815) and Henri Fantin-Latour
(1836-1904).
The primary aim of the Kent Print Collection is to give
undergraduate students the opportunity to collect art on behalf
of the School of Drama, Film & Visual Arts, and to put on
museum-standard exhibitions drawing on this resource. The
collection is closely linked to the Print Collecting and Curating
undergraduate module that, uniquely, offers students a practicebased
approach to learning about art through the activities of
collecting, cataloguing and curating.
Dr Ben Thomas, Lecturer in History & Philosophy of Art, said
‘While we are not the only university to have an art collection or
feature student-run exhibitions, we are certainly leading the field
in presenting students with the opportunity to buy works of art
on behalf of the department, and in creating opportunities for
gaining important work experience on campus.’
FM student radio station launched
With help from the Annual Fund, the new version of UKC
Radio was launched in January. Canterbury Student Radio
(CSR) is a brand-new radio station run by students from
local schools, universities and colleges. Aimed at 14 to 25
year-olds, the station is an initiative by Canterbury Youth and
Student Media Ltd, a company established by the four main
funding bodies – the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ
Church University, Kent Union and Christ Church Students’
Union.
Although Kent Union and Christ Church Students’ Union
will be heading the venture, and are the first students’
unions in the UK to be awarded a Community Radio
licence from Ofcom, the focus of the project will be on the
wider impact on and involvement of the entire Canterbury
community.
Luke Nicholson, Student Media Co-ordinator at Kent Union
and CSR Radio Station Co-ordinator, said,‘CSR provides
students with the opportunity to make their voices heard in
the city while ensuring there is an advert-free, fresh
sounding radio station that caters precisely for the needs of
young students and individuals in the area. It also offers
students at a variety of institutions the opportunity to learn
about broadcasting and gain technical radio experience, with
training and guidance provided for all areas and aspects of
the station. All the DJs, technicians, web team and music
reviewers, as well as those responsible for producing the
news, are students.’
If you’re in the Canterbury area you can hear CSR on
Claire Tanner (E98) (neé James)
2006-2009
Claire returned to the University of Kent in
September 2006 to begin a PhD in Women’s
Political Representation in the United
Kingdom. Her research specialises in the
political experiences of women
representatives in local and devolved
government, and the ways in which social
and institutional barriers to women’s
participation can be removed. At present
only 19% of MPs and 27% of local
councillors are women and Claire is
examining both existing political theory and
national experiences of inequality to inform
her research within local authorities. She is
also working with local women’s community
groups to examine their interaction with
decision makers at local and regional level.
Claire completed her undergraduate degree
in Politics and International Relations (1998-
2002) and graduated with First Class
Honours and the Brian Keith Lucas Prize for
Academic Excellence. After four years
working in student support at Kent Union
and in secondary education, the Alumni
Scholarship made it possible for her to
return to full-time postgraduate study.
Nick Foster 2006-2009
Nick Foster was also successful in gaining an
alumni postgraduate scholarship in 2006. He
says, ‘From an early age I have been
fascinated by space and the planets around
us. Whilst carrying out my undergraduate
degree in Physics with Space Science and
Systems at Kent, my knowledge was
expanded and made me keener then ever
on the subject.Through the Alumni
scholarship I have been able to get involved
in research working with scientists from
NASA and UK institutions, analysing samples
returned from NASA’s Stardust mission.The
Stardust mission flew to comet Wild/2 to
collect early and intact samples from the
formation of our Solar System and returned
them to Earth in January 2006.These
precious grains will help us gain a greater
knowledge of how our Solar System has
evolved.’

Updates from previous scholars
John Hammond 2005-2008
John is working towards a Master of
Philosophy (MPhil) in Classical &
Archaeological Studies.
His research is focused on helping to
determine the nature of cross-Channel
contact between the people of Kent and
those of Northern France during the second
and third millennia BC. It is a part of some
pioneering work that will change perceptions
of how our ancient forebears lived and died.
John has had a busy and productive first year.
He writes: ‘I have completed the UK data
collection phase of my research and I am
now nearing the end of the preliminary
analysis of this data. I anticipate completing
the entire UK data-analysis section by the
end of November which will be about 25-
30,000 words of my first chapter. At the
same time I have begun collecting data from
France.
I have also created a relational database,
which now extends to more than 2,000
individual records and I have recorded and
plotted around 800 categorised
archaeological sites in Kent. Using this
package I have been able to generate
distribution maps showing the spread, and
geographic relationships, of all known late
Neolithic and Early Bronze Age funerary
sites.
I have written two papers, one has been
accepted for publication in Archaeologia
Cantiana – the annual peer-reviewed journal
published by the Kent Archaeological Society.
The other has gone to the British Prehistoric
2
Larry Grant
human rights lawyer and campaigner
Society’s annual 1943-2003 PPS journal. It has been
accepted by the editor and is currently out
with referees. In addition I have written an
opinion piece for the popular magazine
British Archaeology, which was published in
April. As a consequence, the editor has
asked me to become a regular contributor.
From the beginning of this academic year I
have been teaching at the University on the
Archaeology undergraduate courses. I am
also delivering two lectures on my research
to students on the new Archaeology of the
Transmanche taught MA.
Emma Berry (neé Silvester) 2004-2007
Has had health problems and is considering
not continuing and finishing with an MA.
Larry Grant Scholarship in the
Kent Law School
Kent Law alumni from the mid-70s will
remember Larry Grant as the Legal Director
of the pioneering Kent Law Clinic. Few
lawyers have devoted themselves so
steadfastly and effectively as Larry Grant did
to supporting the powerless, to defending
fundamental rights and liberties and to
promoting justice and dignity.
Since he died suddenly in January 2003, his
friends and colleagues have been considering
how to memorialise Larry and his
achievements as a lawyer, writer, teacher and
judge.This scholarship is the result.The
money raised will help fund one or more
postgraduate students each year to conduct
research in areas related to the interests,
principles, and causes for which Larry
worked so hard.
The Law School at Kent has warmly
welcomed the initiative and will match the
amount awarded to a student by the Larry
Grant Scholarship Fund. Thus if the fund is
able to award a scholarship of £1,500, the
Law School will contribute a similar amount,
bringing the total value of the award to
£3,000.
The Fund already has pledges of nearly
£19,000, and the hope is to raise £50,000. If
you would like to contribute or if you would
like to know more, please get in touch with
Larry’s widow, Hilary Ives (0207 267 5400
Supporting
Sponsored events news
On Saturday 21 October 2006, a team of
University of Kent alumni from the 1990s,
University of Kent staff and friends walked the
Crab and Winkle Way from Canterbury to
Whitstable (a total of 7.5 miles) to raise money
for the University’s Annual Fund. Between them
they raised the magnificent sum of £700.
‘My years at University were incredibly enjoyable
and rewarding. The sponsored walk was an easy
and enjoyable way to ‘put something back in’ to
Kent. Of course there were other, less noble
reasons for doing so: an opportunity to meet
some old friends and enjoy a visit back to
Canterbury!’ said Ryan Harris (E97).
Taking part in the October launch event: Miles
Banbery (D90), Ryan Harris (E97),Tracy Wong,
Steven Pollard (D97), Anna Fisher (K98), Claire
Morgan (K98), Killara Burn (Director of
Development), Nicole Harris, Rachel Hardiman
(R97) andUrsula Fuller (E77 and Dean of Flexible
Learning).
If you would like to raise funds for Kent’s Annual
Fund by taking part in a sponsored event, please
visit www.kent.ac.uk/sponsoredevents or contact
Anna Fisher on 01227 824670. Whatever type of
event you choose, your efforts will be deeply
appreciated and will be a great way of raising
money for the Annual Fund.
Government matched funding £600
million to be generated for higher
education
The government is to provide £200 million over
three years for a matched-funding scheme to
support English universities.The scheme is
intended to stimulate additional private cash
donations to the sector of over £400 million –
meaning £600 million in total could be generated
for higher education.
‘The link between a university’s ability to attract
external support and its reputation is increasingly
evident,’ said Joanna Motion,Vice-President
International for the Council for Advancement
and Support of Education (CASE), based in
London. ‘The government is giving a timely boost
to the international competitiveness of universities
in England.’ (Joanna Motion was Director of
Communications & Development at Kent until
2000, when she moved to CASE.)
Many people don’t realise that universities in the
UK, including Kent, were established in large part
through private donations as well as public funds.
In the past ten years universities in the UK have
shown renewed commitment to fundraising,
investing in development offices staffed by
professionals and raising expectations of what can
be achieved through the support of alumni and
friends.
Online giving
The Alumni website can accept regular online
donations from a credit or debit card. This new
facility sits alongside our existing online donation
pages for single gifts. See http://www.kent.ac.uk/
Give As You Earn (GAYE) Bronze
Award
For the second year running, the University is
delighted to have been awarded a Quality Mark
Certificate for fostering a culture of giving in the
workplace by promoting payroll giving. The Annual
Fund continues to receive regular income from our
GAYE donors for which we are most grateful. If
your employer offers GAYE and you would like to
make a pre-tax donation to the Annual Fund
through the scheme, you should obtain the GAYE
form from your Pay Office and nominate the
University of Kent Development Trust as your
chosen charity.
To give to Kent
To make a gift, you can either use the form
opposite, or use the new online giving facility at
www.kent.ac.uk/alumni/donate. Check with your
employer to see if they match employee donations
– many do.
All UK taxpayers should be giving to charity via
Gift Aid, as this increases the value of gifts by
approximately 22%. If you are a higher rate
taxpayer, a gift to Kent through Gift Aid would
cost you 18% less.
Some of Kent’s donors are regular givers to charity
and have set up accounts with the Charities Aid
Foundation – Kent is delighted to accept charity
card or cheque donations or indeed gifts through
CAF America, with which we are now registered
as well. Donors in the USA should go to the
website www.kent.ac.uk/alumni/donate/usa.html in
order to make an income tax deductible gift to
Kent.
If you would like to give shares or if you are
interested in finding out about making a gift to
Kent in your will, please get in touch with us at
giving@kent.ac.uk.
