John Hammond 2005-2008<br />
John is working towards a Master <strong>of</strong><br />
Philosophy (MPhil) in Classical &<br />
Archaeological Studies.<br />
His research is focused on helping to<br />
determine the nature <strong>of</strong> cross-Channel<br />
contact between the people <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kent</strong> and<br />
those <strong>of</strong> Northern France during the second<br />
and third millennia BC. It is a part <strong>of</strong> some<br />
pioneering work that will change perceptions<br />
<strong>of</strong> how our ancient forebears lived and died.<br />
John has had a busy and productive first year.<br />
He writes: ‘I have completed the UK data<br />
collection phase <strong>of</strong> my research and I am<br />
now nearing the end <strong>of</strong> the preliminary<br />
analysis <strong>of</strong> this data. I anticipate completing<br />
the entire UK data-analysis section by the<br />
end <strong>of</strong> November which will be about 25-<br />
30,000 words <strong>of</strong> my first chapter. At the<br />
same time I have begun collecting data from<br />
France.<br />
I have also created a relational database,<br />
which now extends to more than 2,000<br />
individual records and I have recorded and<br />
plotted around 800 categorised<br />
archaeological sites in <strong>Kent</strong>. Using this<br />
package I have been able to generate<br />
distribution maps showing the spread, and<br />
geographic relationships, <strong>of</strong> all known late<br />
Neolithic and Early Bronze Age funerary<br />
sites.<br />
I have written two papers, one has been<br />
accepted for publication in Archaeologia<br />
Cantiana – the annual peer-reviewed journal<br />
published by the <strong>Kent</strong> Archaeological Society.<br />

human rights lawyer and campaigner<br />
Society’s annual 1943-2003 PPS journal. It has been<br />
accepted by the editor and is currently out<br />
with referees. In addition I have written an<br />
opinion piece for the popular magazine<br />
British Archaeology, which was published in<br />
April. As a consequence, the editor has<br />
asked me to become a regular contributor.<br />
From the beginning <strong>of</strong> this academic year I<br />
have been teaching at the <strong>University</strong> on the<br />
Archaeology undergraduate courses. I am<br />
also delivering two lectures on my research<br />
to students on the new Archaeology <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Transmanche taught MA.<br />

Has had health problems and is considering<br />
not continuing and finishing with an MA.<br />
Larry Grant Scholarship in the<br />
<strong>Kent</strong> Law School<br />
<strong>Kent</strong> Law alumni from the mid-70s will<br />
remember Larry Grant as the Legal Director<br />
<strong>of</strong> the pioneering <strong>Kent</strong> Law Clinic. Few<br />
lawyers have devoted themselves so<br />
steadfastly and effectively as Larry Grant did<br />
to supporting the powerless, to defending<br />
fundamental rights and liberties and to<br />
promoting justice and dignity.<br />
Since he died suddenly in January 2003, his<br />
friends and colleagues have been considering<br />
how to memorialise Larry and his<br />
achievements as a lawyer, writer, teacher and<br />
judge.This scholarship is the result.The<br />
money raised will help fund one or more<br />
postgraduate students each year to conduct<br />
research in areas related to the interests,<br />
principles, and causes for which Larry<br />
worked so hard.<br />
The Law School at <strong>Kent</strong> has warmly<br />
welcomed the initiative and will match the<br />
amount awarded to a student by the Larry<br />
Grant Scholarship Fund.Thus if the fund is<br />
able to award a scholarship <strong>of</strong> £1,500, the<br />
Law School will contribute a similar amount,<br />
bringing the total value <strong>of</strong> the award to<br />
£3,000.<br />
The Fund already has pledges <strong>of</strong> nearly<br />
£19,000, and the hope is to raise £50,000. If<br />
