Updates from previous scholars
John Hammond 2005-2008
John is working towards a Master of
Philosophy (MPhil) in Classical &
Archaeological Studies.
His research is focused on helping to
determine the nature of cross-Channel
contact between the people of Kent and
those of Northern France during the second
and third millennia BC. It is a part of some
pioneering work that will change perceptions
of how our ancient forebears lived and died.
John has had a busy and productive first year.
He writes: ‘I have completed the UK data
collection phase of my research and I am
now nearing the end of the preliminary
analysis of this data. I anticipate completing
the entire UK data-analysis section by the
end of November which will be about 25-
30,000 words of my first chapter. At the
same time I have begun collecting data from
France.
I have also created a relational database,
which now extends to more than 2,000
individual records and I have recorded and
plotted around 800 categorised
archaeological sites in Kent. Using this
package I have been able to generate
distribution maps showing the spread, and
geographic relationships, of all known late
Neolithic and Early Bronze Age funerary
sites.
I have written two papers, one has been
accepted for publication in Archaeologia
Cantiana – the annual peer-reviewed journal
published by the Kent Archaeological Society.
The other has gone to the British Prehistoric
2
Larry Grant
human rights lawyer and campaigner
Society’s annual 1943-2003 PPS journal. It has been
accepted by the editor and is currently out
with referees. In addition I have written an
opinion piece for the popular magazine
British Archaeology, which was published in
April. As a consequence, the editor has
asked me to become a regular contributor.
From the beginning of this academic year I
have been teaching at the University on the
Archaeology undergraduate courses. I am
also delivering two lectures on my research
to students on the new Archaeology of the
Transmanche taught MA.
Emma Berry (neé Silvester) 2004-2007
Has had health problems and is considering
not continuing and finishing with an MA.
Larry Grant Scholarship in the
Kent Law School
Kent Law alumni from the mid-70s will
remember Larry Grant as the Legal Director
of the pioneering Kent Law Clinic. Few
lawyers have devoted themselves so
steadfastly and effectively as Larry Grant did
to supporting the powerless, to defending
fundamental rights and liberties and to
promoting justice and dignity.
Since he died suddenly in January 2003, his
friends and colleagues have been considering
how to memorialise Larry and his
achievements as a lawyer, writer, teacher and
judge.This scholarship is the result.The
money raised will help fund one or more
postgraduate students each year to conduct
research in areas related to the interests,
principles, and causes for which Larry
worked so hard.
The Law School at Kent has warmly
welcomed the initiative and will match the
amount awarded to a student by the Larry
Grant Scholarship Fund. Thus if the fund is
able to award a scholarship of £1,500, the
Law School will contribute a similar amount,
bringing the total value of the award to
£3,000.
The Fund already has pledges of nearly
£19,000, and the hope is to raise £50,000. If
you would like to contribute or if you would
like to know more, please get in touch with
Larry’s widow, Hilary Ives (0207 267 5400
or 07966 139004), Richard de Friend
(richard.de-friend@lawcol.co.uk), or Steve
Uglow (S.P.Uglow@kent.ac.uk).
