well with his gritty dramas about machismo
in Manhattan. This new one is about a police
officer who opens a 15-year-old case and
learns how the men who’ve raised him were
“made.” Again paired with Channing Tatum
(Fighting), Montiel shoots in his native
Queens, and watches cops wrestle cops in a
town where fathers disappear and their sons
muscle for rank alongside criminals.

The head of the FBI for many decades, J.
Edgar Hoover is famous for two things: his
gleefully punitive policies and cross-dressing.
One of these is the product of urban
legend but evidence can be dug up for both,
making this rehashing of Hoover’s reign as
law man that much more controversial; he
had as much impact on the concept of criminality
as Sherlock Holmes had on investigation.
This period piece is director Clint
Eastwood’s (Dirty Harry) latest attempt to
understand the vigilante.

This adventure film, made with the gladiatorial
glitz of 300, watches warrior Theseus
fling magical arrows to overthrow the
wicked King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke).
Perhaps attempting to improve upon last
year’s Clash of the Titans tumble, this saga of
Olympus features gods of varied sex appeal
and direction by Tarsem Singh (The Fall). As
Theseus, the chosen warrior, Henry Cavill
(TV’s The Tudors and the next Superman)
will finally make ample use of his supersquare
jaw.
