George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is an actor
with such appeal he has the world at his
perfectly adorned feet—until he stumbles
upon Peppy Miller (Bernice Bejo), the girl
he loves despite his wife, and helps despite
his descending popularity as the silent film
is slowly replaced with talking pictures.
This star-studded international picture is
lousy with charisma, just the thing that
made those silent black and whites twinkle
and shine in their heyday.
Based on a popular book, this family feature
marks Martin Scorsese’s first foray into 3D.
Scorsese’s a family man so it was only time
before he took a break from his gangsters
and “modern saints” to make a kid’s film,
and this one is as much a valentine to the
magic of youth as to the origins of cinema.
Hugo Cabret receives a mechanical man
from his father only days before he loses
dad in a fire. Alone and without his father’s
last gift, he searches Paris for it, chased by
arriving trains and aided by his own Méliès,
a magician whose mechanical toys conjure
magic.
It’s seldom we see major trends in modern
thought and have a person to credit for
them. While it’d be foolhardy to say Chogyam
Trungpa was singlehandedly responsible
for assisting this nation in the post-war
interest in Buddhism, but his teaching, his
timing and his outspokenness were evident
contributors to the America’s connection to
eastern thought and its pervasiveness in our
practices from art to politics.
A hot Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender)
meets a wounded Sabine Spielrein (Keira
Knightly) in Victorian Vienna, and saves
her wounded psyche with talk therapy—
new at the time and spearheaded by his
distant mentor Dr. Sigmund Freud (Viggo
Mortensen). As Spielrein improves, she
develops skill in the field of psychology,
goes to school, graduates into practice
and falls into the arms of a married Dr.
Jung. It’s a ferocious affair; the sort to
destroy lives—or at least reputations—
and in a medical establishment so new
and easily tarnished, they should be taker
greater precautions … and being quieter
in bed.
