Target Group<br />
This programme, which started <strong>in</strong> 2006, targets fifty students from secondary schools on an<br />
annual basis. Senior secondary school students, both males and females, between the ages of<br />
15 and 18 who are <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> explor<strong>in</strong>g the opportunities tourism provides as a viable career<br />
option are eligible, and can access <strong>in</strong>formation on the programme through their school pr<strong>in</strong>cipal.<br />
Interested students send <strong>in</strong> an application form to the M<strong>in</strong>istry of <strong>Tourism</strong> express<strong>in</strong>g their<br />
desire to be <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the programme.<br />
Programme Feedback/Results<br />
There is a participant’s review form and the feedback from the students and parents has been<br />
outstand<strong>in</strong>g and graduates have gone back to the schools to talk to students to encourage<br />
enrollment. Hotels, which hosted students have been pleased with the <strong>in</strong>terns and agreed to<br />
take more <strong>in</strong> 2007.<br />
Challenges/Areas for Improvement<br />
♦ To obta<strong>in</strong> more placement open<strong>in</strong>gs for <strong>in</strong>ternships<br />
♦ Lack of response by some school pr<strong>in</strong>cipals to share <strong>in</strong>vitations with eligible students<br />
♦ To add to the 2007/2008 programme more dest<strong>in</strong>ation tours i.e. local tours with the theme “Know<br />
Your Island”; organised presentations/rap sessions with the group by the M<strong>in</strong>ister of <strong>Tourism</strong> (once<br />
per term)<br />
