THE BAHAMAS<br />

Name of the <strong>Programmes</strong>:<br />

The Bahamian M<strong>in</strong>istry of <strong>Tourism</strong> and<br />

the Bahamian Hotel Association have<br />

implemented many tourism awareness<br />

programmes aimed at Junior High<br />

(Secondary) school children and tertiary<br />

level students throughout the island.<br />

Programme Goals:<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dicates the objectives of these programmes:<br />

• Heighten the tourism awareness among the youth, thereby educat<strong>in</strong>g students about the<br />

importance of tourism to the Bahamian economy<br />

• Elim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g the perception that careers <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustry are menial and not as reward<strong>in</strong>g as<br />

traditional careers<br />

• Address the decl<strong>in</strong>ed work ethic and negative attitudes displayed by some high school<br />

graduates who are employed at entry level <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

Brief Description of the <strong>Programmes</strong>:<br />

H.O.T.E.L. Adopt-A-School<br />

Programme<br />

This programme was first <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong><br />

1992 as the Adopt-A-School Program <strong>in</strong><br />

which the Junior M<strong>in</strong>ister of <strong>Tourism</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>itiative was <strong>in</strong>troduced. It was<br />

rebranded <strong>in</strong> 1998 as H.O.T.E.L. Adopt-A-<br />

School Program and H.O.T.E.L. is an<br />

acronym for Hospitality Opportunities<br />

Through Experiential Learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Corporate Mentor<strong>in</strong>g Programme<br />

Stage 1: The Corporate Mentor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Programme is a ten-week mentor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

course and <strong>in</strong>teractive approach to<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g about the tourism <strong>in</strong>dustry for<br />

grade 11 bus<strong>in</strong>ess students from each of the 18 schools <strong>in</strong> the Adopt-A-School Programme.<br />
