Social Paediatrics in Saskatoon in Association with St. Mary's

o Urgent cases are /should be discussed with the paediatrician so that patients
are seen in a timely manner.
o Transportation to and from appointments are facilitated through the schools.
6) Collaboration across sectors/disciplines/professions:
o The influences on health are complex; improving the health and well-being of
children and youth living in poverty requires collaboration across professions,
disciplines and sectors.
7) Training and Teaching:
There are 2 components to teaching:
a) The School-Based Social Paediatric Program provides us with the opportunity to
expose paediatric residents and medical students to a non-traditional model of care in
which they learn about:
o Social accountability
o Advocacy, not only for individual patients but at the community and societal
level.
o The effects of the social determinants on health. We have recently established
a school-based clinic at St. Mark's elementary school. This environment is
enabling us to teach first year medical students paediatric clinical skills in the
Kindergarten age-group, exposing medical students to a non-traditional
teaching environment. At the same time, it provides the families of students
