Social Paediatrics in Saskatoon in Association with St. Mary's

The registered dietitian also works with the school nutrition coordinator to
enhance the current breakfast, lunch and snack program at St. Mary’s School. Current
efforts are to provide and support education opportunities to food service staff working
with the nutrition program. The dietitian will be consulting with the school nutrition
coordinator in areas such as meal planning, portion sizes and label reading.
As time allows, nutrition presentations or projects are prepared that complement
the existing school curriculum. Topics include but are not limited to nutrition and
digestion, Canada’s Food Guide, label reading, how to choose healthy foods for a healthy
body and eating for activity.
Proper nutrition has been linked to academic performance including improved
memory and concentration. In support of this knowledge, in February 2010, the Greater
Saskatoon Catholic School Division enacted a nutrition policy. Supporting documents
include Nourishing Minds and Healthy Foods for My School which are available on the
Ministry of Health website. Nutrition services will support these documents as time
allows. As nutrition services increase then more supports to the existing policy will be
able to take place.
Theo Phillips, RD is a registered dietitian and private consultant in Saskatoon and
is a member of Dietitian’s of Canada and the Saskatchewan Dietitian’s Association. She
has been providing nutrition consulting services to St. Mary’s School over the past school
term.
