College of Nursing The primary goal of the St. Mary’s Community School partnership with the College of Nursing is to complement the existing healthcare and social services available at the school by providing health education to the school children. The program began in the spring of 2007 with 26 nursing students participating in the program since that time. School settings provide a rich environment for nursing students to integrate community-based theory taught in the nursing program into a practice setting. It also helps build the students’ ability to communicate, collaborate, and contribute to Population Health Promotion and Primary Health Care in an interdisciplinary community setting. Population Health Promotion and Primary Health Care, the basis of community health in Saskatchewan, can be “brought to life” for nursing students while working in a school environment. Students learn to become a member of a community while participating in health promotion activities with students, classes, teachers, and parents in promoting health and wellness of populations within the school and the larger associated community. The objectives of raising health awareness are: 1) To address health education interests and needs identified by the school, children, teachers and the community. 2) To increase the interaction of school children and healthcare providers in nonthreatening (non-medical treatment related) atmosphere. 3) To create health education tools that contribute to school-based resources for health promotion that address the curriculum and “out of the box” programs that address the unique context of the school and the challenges faced by children in schools today. The objectives of the College of Nursing and GSCS collaboration are to: 1) Provide a practicum placement for nursing students in St. Mary’s Community School as a means to increase students’ competencies in school based nursing skills with a particular emphasis on community assessment, cultural competency and relationship building. 2) Enable students to identify the determinants of poor health. © Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Division 2011 23
