Etomidate / Characteristics
1. It is an imidazole-containing hypnotic unrelated to
other anesthetics.
2. It is most commonly used as an IV induction agent
for general anesthesia.
3. Mode of action: Augments the inhibitory tone of
GABA in the CNS.
Etomidate / Pharmacokinetics
a. Metabolized in the liver and by circulating
esterases to inactive metabolites.
b. Times to loss of consciousness and
awakening after a sleep dose are similar to
those of propofol.
