OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ACTIVITIES<br />

IN GAZA FIELD<br />

In each camp, a team composed by one health education worker and participants under <strong>the</strong> Job Creation Programme (JCP)were assigned<br />

to promote and disseminate environmental awareness related to: <strong>the</strong> proper handling and disposal <strong>of</strong> domestic solid waste, water supply,<br />

disposal <strong>of</strong> wastewater, insect and rodent control at UNRWA schools and women activity centres. They also carried out house to house visits<br />

to raise awareness <strong>of</strong> residents on such environmental issues.<br />

IN WEST BANK FIELD<br />

The Environmental <strong>Health</strong> Divisions launched awareness workshops and trainings on environmental health issues, aiming at raising public<br />

awareness in camps and improving <strong>the</strong> general understanding <strong>of</strong> aspects such as <strong>the</strong> proper handling <strong>of</strong> domestic and medical waste<br />

and<strong>the</strong> rationalization <strong>of</strong> water consumption. In <strong>2010</strong> <strong>the</strong> following activities were performed:<br />

- The three Area Sanitation Officers attended a workshop about Food and Water Safety on <strong>the</strong> 22nd <strong>of</strong> February <strong>2010</strong> at <strong>the</strong> Red Crescent<br />

Society Office in Ramallah. Food and Water laboratories were discussed in this workshop.<br />

- A cleaning campaign under <strong>the</strong> name “I like my camp clean” was conducted in Al ‘Arrub camp on <strong>the</strong> 15th <strong>of</strong> April <strong>2010</strong>. The campaign was<br />

arranged by health committee in <strong>the</strong> camp and sanitation labourers and o<strong>the</strong>r volunteers from <strong>the</strong> camp participated. It included several<br />

activities such as cleaning <strong>the</strong> streets after dividing <strong>the</strong> participants into working groups.Hats, gloves and masks were distributed to<br />

participants and lectures about personal hygiene and environmental health were given.<br />

- A voluntary cleaning campaign was conducted in Aqbat Jaber camp on <strong>the</strong> 8th <strong>of</strong> May <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

- The first Leishmaniasis campaign started on <strong>the</strong> 18th <strong>of</strong> May <strong>2010</strong> and was completed on <strong>the</strong> 22nd <strong>of</strong> June <strong>2010</strong>. 323 litres <strong>of</strong> insecticides<br />

were consumed. The campaign was carried out jointly with <strong>the</strong> Jericho municipality and in cooperation with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Palestinian Authority (PA) in Jericho.<br />

- The second Leishmaniasis campaign started on <strong>the</strong> 12th <strong>of</strong> July and was completed on <strong>the</strong> 17th <strong>of</strong> August <strong>2010</strong>. 292 litres <strong>of</strong> insecticides<br />

were consumed. The campaign was carried out jointly with Jericho municipality and in cooperation with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> PA<br />

in Jericho. The campaign was successful and carried out satisfactorily according to <strong>the</strong> schedule and <strong>the</strong> understanding outlined in <strong>the</strong> last<br />

meeting with <strong>the</strong> municipality and PA Ministry <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong>.<br />

IN JORDAN FIELD<br />

A health awareness and cleaning campaign was conducted in <strong>the</strong> Jarash camp from <strong>the</strong> 26th <strong>of</strong> June to <strong>the</strong> 1st <strong>of</strong> July <strong>2010</strong>. Its aim was to<br />

raise community awareness on summer seasonal diseases and to enhance community cooperation and involvement in <strong>the</strong> cleaning<br />

process. Various activities, such as health awareness lectures and meetings, distribution <strong>of</strong> posters and brochures, joint cleaning and rodent<br />

control campaigns, painting and removal <strong>of</strong> debris,were carried out througha joint collaboration between UNRWA, community associations,<br />

Municipalities and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Palestinian Affairs.<br />

An in-service training seminar for Sanitation Foremen and Inspectors was conducted on <strong>the</strong> 22nd and 23rd <strong>of</strong> November <strong>2010</strong> at Baqa'a<br />

Environmental <strong>Health</strong> Office. Twenty-three Foremen and three Inspectors attended this seminar which covered <strong>the</strong> subjects <strong>of</strong> Environmental<br />

<strong>Health</strong> School Inspection and <strong>the</strong> New Method <strong>of</strong> Cockroaches Control. The seminar was facilitated by <strong>the</strong> Field Sanitary Engineer and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Sanitation Supervisor.<br />

A hygiene awareness training workshop was conducted for 36 food handlers working at UNRWA installations on <strong>the</strong> 9th and 10th <strong>of</strong> June<br />

<strong>2010</strong> in <strong>the</strong> Jordan Field Office. It was facilitated by <strong>the</strong> Field Sanitary Engineer and <strong>the</strong> Sanitation Supervisor.<br />

Fifteen cleaners at HQ, Amman were trained on hygiene awareness to improve <strong>the</strong>ir cleaning activities. The training was facilitated by <strong>the</strong><br />

Field Sanitation Supervisor on <strong>the</strong> 26th <strong>of</strong> October <strong>2010</strong> in <strong>the</strong> HQ's training room.<br />
