The changed regulations will allow<br />

jo<strong>in</strong>t ventures. Hong Kong Air Cargo<br />
Term<strong>in</strong>als (HACTL) reported its highest<br />
ever throughput <strong>in</strong> the 2002 year, at<br />
1,903,507 tonnes, an <strong>in</strong>crease of 19.6% on<br />
2001 and a result which beat the previous<br />
record of 1,749,372 tonnes <strong>in</strong> 2000. Shenzhen<br />
Airport, just across the border<br />
from Hong Kong, reported that cargo<br />
volume at its facility <strong>in</strong>creased by 20% <strong>in</strong><br />
2002, compared to 12 months earlier. The<br />
U.S. Government has given the go-ahead<br />
for Federal Express (FedEx), Northwest<br />
Airl<strong>in</strong>es, Polar Air Cargo and<br />
United Parcel Service (UPS) to fly 19<br />
new freight services out of Hong Kong<br />
International Airport as part of the Air<br />
Services Agreement signed last October<br />
by Hong Kong and the U. S. Decisions on<br />
applications from four other carriers, Air<br />
Transport International, Atlas Air,<br />
Evergreen International Airl<strong>in</strong>es<br />
and Kalitta Air, are pend<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
CODE-SHARES . . . Star Alliance<br />
members, Air New Zealand (Air NZ)<br />
and Air Canada have expanded their<br />
code-share relationship to <strong>in</strong>clude seats<br />
on Air Canada flights from Los Angeles<br />
to four Canadian cities: Calgary, Montreal,<br />
Toronto and Vancouver. In January,<br />
Cathay Pacific Airways won approval<br />
to code-share with American Airl<strong>in</strong>es<br />
to 20 U.S. cities, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g New York,<br />
Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, Las Vegas,<br />
Miami and Wash<strong>in</strong>gton DC/Baltimore.<br />
Thai Airways International (THAI)<br />
and Myanmar Airways will operate<br />
23 code-share services weekly between<br />
Bangkok and Yangon.<br />
FLEETS . . . Cathay Pacific Airways<br />
took delivery of the first of its three<br />
new Airbus A340-600s <strong>in</strong> late November,<br />
however chief operat<strong>in</strong>g officer, Philip<br />
Chen, said at the time that speculation<br />
the aircraft (two more of the type arrived<br />
<strong>in</strong> Hong Kong <strong>in</strong> early 2003) would<br />
def<strong>in</strong>itely be deployed on proposed nonstop<br />
services between Hong Kong and<br />
New York was <strong>in</strong>correct. “We have to<br />
see how our code-share arrangements<br />
with American Airl<strong>in</strong>es are developed,<br />
among other factors,” he told reporters<br />
on the delivery flight from Toulouse to<br />
Hong Kong. Taiwan’s Ch<strong>in</strong>a Airl<strong>in</strong>es<br />
confirmed its order for 10 Boe<strong>in</strong>g B747-<br />
400s, with a book value of US$2 billion<br />
on December 30. Qantas Airways<br />
took delivery of its first Airbus A330-<br />
200 <strong>in</strong> Toulouse <strong>in</strong> December, a delivery<br />
flight which marked Qantas’ entry to the<br />
Airbus client list. Qantas has ordered a<br />
mix of 13 A330-200s and -300s, powered<br />
by GE-CF6-80E1s eng<strong>in</strong>es, as well as<br />
an order for 12 A380s. Royal Brunei<br />
Airl<strong>in</strong>es has taken seven-year operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
leases on two Airbus A319-100 from<br />
CIT Aerospace, with deliveries due <strong>in</strong><br />
August and September respectively.<br />
LEASING . . . Ansett Worldwide<br />
has delivered its third B767-300ER aircraft<br />
to Vietnam Airl<strong>in</strong>es. The leas<strong>in</strong>g<br />
company owns 178 aircraft on lease to<br />
72 <strong>airl<strong>in</strong>es</strong> <strong>in</strong> 45 countries. S<strong>in</strong>gapore<br />
Aircraft Leas<strong>in</strong>g Enterprise (SALE)<br />
has negotiated new f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g packages<br />
with BNP Paribas, Kreditanstalkt<br />
fur Wiederaufbau and WestLB AG<br />
to cover delivery to SALE this year of<br />
five Airbus 320s and two Airbus A321s<br />
as well as three A320s <strong>in</strong> 2004.<br />
ROUTES . . . Cathay Pacific Airways<br />
will <strong>in</strong>crease its flights from Hong<br />
Kong to London to three times daily from<br />
June. Korean Air is now fly<strong>in</strong>g from<br />
Seoul to Xiamen and has begun services<br />
from Cheongju to Shanghai (three a<br />
week) and Busan to Xian (twice weekly).<br />
Lufthansa German Airl<strong>in</strong>es will double<br />
its services from Hong Kong to Munich<br />
to six from April. <strong>Orient</strong> Thai will<br />
fly Bangkok to Shanghai five times a week<br />
and Bangkok to Guangzhou three times<br />
weekly from April. Qantas Airways has<br />
<strong>in</strong>creased its flights to Sydney from Hong<br />
Kong to double daily. United Airl<strong>in</strong>es of<br />
the U.S. will operate a second daily flight<br />
from Hong Kong to Tokyo from April<br />
6, despite its f<strong>in</strong>ancial difficulties. The<br />
<strong>in</strong>creased daily service is allowed s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
Hong Kong and the U.S. signed a new<br />
Air Services Agreement.<br />
SAFETY . . . Korean aviation <strong>in</strong>vestigators<br />
seem ready to attribute the cause<br />
of the Air Ch<strong>in</strong>a Boe<strong>in</strong>g 767-200ER<br />
crash <strong>in</strong> Busan last April to pilot error.<br />
The aircraft capta<strong>in</strong> survived the crash,<br />
but 129 of the 155 passengers on board<br />
were killed. A f<strong>in</strong>al report on all aspects<br />
of the accident will be released <strong>in</strong> June.<br />
Ma<strong>in</strong>land Ch<strong>in</strong>a’s X<strong>in</strong>hua news agency<br />
has reported a passenger who started<br />
a fire <strong>in</strong> a Ch<strong>in</strong>a Northern Airl<strong>in</strong>es<br />
MD-82 aircraft, bound from Beij<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
Dalian last May, has been blamed for the<br />
crash, which killed all 112 passengers<br />
onboard. However, the Asian Wall Street<br />
Journal report said neither the airl<strong>in</strong>e nor<br />
the country’s aviation regulators would<br />
confirm the X<strong>in</strong>hua report.<br />
SECURITY . . . Under a recent<br />
agreement negotiated between Australia<br />
and S<strong>in</strong>gapore, Australia will place air<br />
security officers on some Qantas flights<br />
operat<strong>in</strong>g from Australia to S<strong>in</strong>gapore.<br />
Australia, which set up the Air Security<br />
Officer programme after the ‘9/11’ U.S.<br />
terrorist attacks, would also like Indonesia<br />
to agree to a similar system.<br />
