Discussion: A correlation coefficient can range from –1 (perfectly negative correlation) to<br />

+1 (perfectly positive correlation). Thus the results <strong>of</strong> both tests point towards a positive<br />

correlation. There clearly exists a correlation between the light passing through <strong>and</strong> the red-green<br />

proportion <strong>of</strong> the leaves. In further consequence the conclusion can be drawn that the<br />

anthocyanins within the leaves absorb a part <strong>of</strong> the incoming light. But that doesn’t mean that<br />

<strong>Episcia</strong> lilacina develops anthocyanins just because <strong>of</strong> absorbing light. Thereby the reason for the<br />

red <strong>colour</strong> within the leaves is not yet proven. It could be an ancillary effect <strong>of</strong> the main function.<br />

Measurement <strong>of</strong> Radiation<br />

The relation between light <strong>and</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> anthocyanins was already <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

investigated (Gould <strong>and</strong> Neill 1999, Post <strong>and</strong> Vesk 1992, Lee <strong>and</strong> Graham 1986). It has been<br />

ruled out earlier that anthocyanins protect the chloroplasts <strong>of</strong> <strong>Episcia</strong> lilacina from destruction by<br />
