General Description <strong>of</strong> the Flower<br />

Until today, the legitimate pollinator <strong>of</strong> <strong>Episcia</strong> lilacina could not be observed. Because <strong>of</strong> the<br />

mutual adaptions between flowers <strong>and</strong> pollinators, the flower shape as well as different<br />

morphological characteristics can indicate possible visitors. In this chapter these indications were<br />

analysed <strong>and</strong> therefore some pollination groups were taken into consideration, others were<br />

excluded.<br />

Results: <strong>Episcia</strong> lilacina produces single flowers <strong>of</strong> zygomorphic symmetry (Fig. 23). The<br />

pedicel is pilose <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> greenish to reddish <strong>colour</strong>. The calyx consists <strong>of</strong> five sepals, which are all<br />

<strong>of</strong> equal size, free to the base, erect, pilose, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> greenish to reddish <strong>colour</strong>. The shape <strong>of</strong> the<br />

sepals is narrow lanceolate, the margin is entire.<br />

Regarding the corolla, five petals are fused together to form a long tube, which apically bears<br />

an oblique limb <strong>of</strong> rounded petal lobes. The limb is divided into two upper <strong>and</strong> three lower lobes.<br />

The entrance into the tube is a narrow slit so that the flower type may be classified as keyhole-<br />
