Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob;<br />

and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren …<br />

In Isaiah we read: “Who can declare his<br />

generation?” Let us therefore not think<br />

that the evangelist is in contradiction with<br />

the prophet because he here begins to relate<br />

that which the prophet called unrelatable.<br />

For here we have his divine genealogy,<br />

whereas there we deal with his incarnation.<br />

Matthew begins with the human, so that<br />

we may begin through the Man to become<br />

acquainted with God. “The son of David,<br />

the son of Abraham”: the order is revered,<br />

but the change was necessary. Namely, if the<br />

Evangelist had named Abraham first, and then<br />

David, he would have had to repeat the name<br />

Dans Isaïe nous lisons :<br />

« Qui peut raconter sa naissance ? »<br />

Ne croyons pas pour autant que l’évangéliste<br />

est en contradiction avec le prophète,<br />

parce qu’il commence à raconter ici ce que<br />

l’autre déclarait indicible.<br />

Car là-bas il est question de la génération de<br />

Dieu, mais ici de l’incarnation.<br />

Il [Matthieu] commence par le charnel,<br />

afin que nous commencions à apprendre Dieu<br />

à travers l’homme. « Fils de David, fils<br />

d’Abraham. »<br />

L’ordre est inversé, mais cette permutation<br />

est nécessaire. Car si l’évangéliste avait<br />
