In Isaiah we read: “Who can declare his
generation?” Let us therefore not think
that the evangelist is in contradiction with
the prophet because he here begins to relate
that which the prophet called unrelatable.
For here we have his divine genealogy,
whereas there we deal with his incarnation.
Matthew begins with the human, so that
we may begin through the Man to become
acquainted with God. “The son of David,
the son of Abraham”: the order is revered,
but the change was necessary. Namely, if the
Evangelist had named Abraham first, and then
David, he would have had to repeat the name

Dans Isaïe nous lisons :
« Qui peut raconter sa naissance ? »
Ne croyons pas pour autant que l’évangéliste
est en contradiction avec le prophète,
parce qu’il commence à raconter ici ce que
l’autre déclarait indicible.
Car là-bas il est question de la génération de
Dieu, mais ici de l’incarnation.
Il [Matthieu] commence par le charnel,
afin que nous commencions à apprendre Dieu
à travers l’homme. « Fils de David, fils
d’Abraham. »
L’ordre est inversé, mais cette permutation
est nécessaire. Car si l’évangéliste avait
