ACCIDENTS<br />

Accidents are posted <strong>to</strong> a driver’s record after a reportable accident. <strong>Oregon</strong> law requires an<br />

accident be reported <strong>to</strong> DMV when one or more <strong>of</strong> the following occurs:<br />

An injury or death <strong>to</strong> any person;<br />

Damage <strong>to</strong> the vehicle you were driving is over $1,500;<br />

Property damage (not including a vehicle involved in the accident) is over $1,500; or<br />

Damage <strong>to</strong> any vehicle is over $1,500 and any vehicle is <strong>to</strong>wed from the scene due <strong>to</strong><br />

damages from the accident.<br />

The following entries show the formats that <strong>Oregon</strong> uses <strong>to</strong> post accidents <strong>to</strong> driving records. The<br />

first format is an example <strong>of</strong> an accident occurring in <strong>Oregon</strong>. The second format is an example <strong>of</strong><br />

an accident occurring in another state and the information was electronically transferred <strong>to</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong>.<br />

(a) Accident. The driver had a reportable accident.<br />

(b) Date the accident happened.<br />

(c) Type <strong>of</strong> accident (collision with).<br />

1 One other mo<strong>to</strong>r vehicle. 5 Mo<strong>to</strong>rized scooter. X Fixed object/property damage.<br />

2 Three or more other vehicles. 6 Bicycle. R Noncollision.<br />

3 Pedestrian. 8 Animal.<br />

4 Railroad train. 9 Light rail “MAX”.<br />

Another symbol may follow one <strong>of</strong> the previous codes, as follows:<br />

P Nonfatal accident, police report filed.<br />

* Fatal accident, police report filed.<br />

(d) DMV reference number. This number is assigned by the Accident Reporting Unit <strong>to</strong> identify<br />

the location <strong>of</strong> the accident report.<br />

(e) Accident information. Displays one <strong>of</strong> the following:<br />

BLANK The accident was not employment related.<br />

EMPLOY The accident was employment related.<br />

VCTD The accident has been vacated.<br />

(f) Special notation code.<br />

BLANK No special notations or driver improvement action taken.<br />

A Preventable accident. Used as part <strong>of</strong> DMV’s Driver Improvement Program.<br />

N Nonpreventable accident. Used as part <strong>of</strong> DMV’s Driver Improvement Program.<br />

U Preventability undetermined. Used as part <strong>of</strong> DMV’s Driver Improvement Program.<br />

H Report at Accident Data Unit for coding. (No longer used.)<br />

(g) CMV. The vehicle was a commercial mo<strong>to</strong>r vehicle; otherwise, field is blank.<br />

(h) HAZ. The vehicle was carrying hazardous materials; otherwise, field is blank.<br />

(i) State. Displays the two-character state abbreviation where the accident occurred; otherwise,<br />

field is blank. This data is reported as part <strong>of</strong> a CDL change state-<strong>of</strong>-record transaction.<br />

(j) Out-<strong>of</strong>-state accident number. Displays other state’s accident ID number; otherwise, field is<br />

blank.<br />
