DRIVER IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM ENTRIES
The Driver Improvement Program (DIP) is a two step program. The first step is a restriction of
driving privileges; the second step is a suspension of driving privileges. Persons between 14 and
18 years of age are placed into the Provisional DIP. Persons 18 years of age or older are placed in
the Adult DIP.
LICENSE RESTRICTIONS (Step 1)
There are restrictions under both the Provisional and Adult Driver Improvement (DI) Programs. A
Driver Improvement Restriction segment reads as follows:

(a) Identifies the entry as a RESTRICTION entry.
(b) Effective date of the restriction.
(c) Ending date of the restriction.
(d) Type of driver improvement program. Displays one of the following:
PROV DI REST Provisional DI Restriction: Driver is under 18 years old and received two convictions, two
preventable accidents or a combination that totals two. Driving privileges restricted for 90
days to and from, or for, employment with no passengers except parent, stepparent or
guardian.
ADULT DI REST Adult DI Restriction: Driver is over 18 years old and received three convictions, three
preventable accidents or a combination that totals three, in an 18-month period. Driving
privileges restricted for 30 days to prohibit driving between midnight and 5 a.m. except to
and from, or for, employment.
DRIVER IMPROVEMENT SUSPENSIONS (Step 2)
There are suspensions under both the Provisional and Adult Driver Improvement Programs. A
Driver Improvement Suspension segment reads as follows:

page 26 of this manual. Adult and Provisional DI suspension types (field (d)) consists of PRV MJR;
PRV CONVAR; PRV ACCAPA; PRV/ACC/H; ADLT CONVAR; ADLT ACCAPA; and ADLT ACC/H.

DRIVER IMPROVEMENT COURSE ENTRIES
The following entry is used only when DMV is notified that a driver has completed a driver
improvement course as a requirement for a probationary permit.
