Circumstances of detention: One evening in May 2008, MJ was in her house in Vavuniya when CID<br />
officials and members of PLOTE arrived and asked for her by name. MJ told <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong> <strong>Watch</strong><br />
she had recently moved from Kilinochchi to Vavuniya and CID officials starting accusing her of<br />
doing so in order to spy on <strong>the</strong> army. MJ said that <strong>the</strong> CID officials took her to Anuradhapura in a<br />
van.<br />
Account:<br />
I was kept in a detention site, but I don’t know where I was. They started interrogating me and took<br />
all my details. They photographed me and took my fingerprints and asked me to sign a form written<br />
in Sinhala. They accused me of being an LTTE spy. They said I had come to plant a bomb in<br />
Vavuniya and spy on <strong>the</strong> army. Then <strong>the</strong>y started torturing me. It was a group of about six people.<br />
They told me <strong>the</strong>y were from <strong>the</strong> CID and PLOTE. They also said that <strong>the</strong>y had all <strong>the</strong> information on<br />
me and my activities. They knew that my sister was with <strong>the</strong> LTTE.<br />
I could hear <strong>the</strong> screams of o<strong>the</strong>r people who were being tortured in <strong>the</strong> same building. I was<br />
burned all over my body with cigarettes. At night, one of <strong>the</strong> persons who said he was from PLOTE<br />
came to my room and raped me. I was raped on three occasions by <strong>the</strong> same person. I became<br />
pregnant as a result of <strong>the</strong>se rapes. My daughter was born in March 2009. 172<br />
MJ’s medico legal <strong>report</strong>, on file with <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong> <strong>Watch</strong>, notes <strong>the</strong> presence of 20 scars on her<br />
body that confirm her account of torture in Sri Lanka.<br />
MJ was detained in <strong>the</strong> camp for two months until July 2008. She told <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong> <strong>Watch</strong> that<br />
an agent secured her release from detention after arranging to pay 10 lakhs Rs [US$ 7,750] as a<br />
bribe to <strong>the</strong> CID.<br />
