radar systems and gas detection in marine environments,

of environmental products and systems. Consilium
offers a number of systems for measurement of gas
emissions from ships. These systems use various techniques

solutions, and on improving the existing product portfolio.
Product development is an important component of overall
business development, and on several occasions has resulted
in Consilium successfully finding new applications for existing
products and developing variants in order to open up new
markets.
For a number of years, Consilium has worked to develop
a common technological platform for the business area’s
total offering, which has also included the development of
processes, methods and tools. the new platform includes
both hardware and software and represents the basis of
Consilium’s offering.

In addition, Consilium has recently launched a
radar solution called Oil Spill Detection Radar, which
makes it possible to detect oil spills with ordinary
type-approved navigational radar.
the marine market
There are over 100,000 commercial vessels and ships
operating around the world. The global merchant
fleet accounts for more than 50,000 of these vessels.
The vessels are registered in over 150 countries,
making shipping one of the world’s most international
industries.
World trade and shipping
About 90 percent of world trade is transported
by ship. The need for efficient maritime transport
is increasing in pace with globalisation, and the
growth of merchant shipping and world trade are
closely linked. Demand for new ships is governed
by development in world trade and its transport
needs. A reasonable estimate is that demand for
transport increases about twice as quickly as world
trade growth. Demand is also driven by shipping
companies’ needs to modernise their fleet when ships
are too old or have high running costs.
Developments in 2011
2011 was a year of natural disasters with devastating
consequences, political unrest in the Middle East
and economic developments in the United States and
Europe which reversed the global recovery that had
been in progress since the financial crisis in 2008.

An important advantage of the new platform is that it,
together with the overall concentration of the product
range, gives Consilium the ability to resolve more tasks with
fewer product variants.
As Consilium develops new and, in many cases, larger
systems, it is increasingly common for certain components
to come from external product suppliers. the composition
of proprietary and external products in integrated systems
and product adaptation play a key part in the Company’s
development work.
