It all depends on how <strong>the</strong> verb $bln (NeLB’aSH) is translated.<br />

To understand whe<strong>the</strong>r this should be translated "we shall" or "let us" you would have to look at <strong>the</strong><br />

grammar of <strong>the</strong> verb <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> verse. For <strong>in</strong>stance 'akha' means 'bro<strong>the</strong>r' but as soon as you change that 'a'<br />

end<strong>in</strong>g to an 'i' end<strong>in</strong>g you have 'akhi' and that means 'my bro<strong>the</strong>r and when you change <strong>the</strong> 'a' end<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

an 'ay' end<strong>in</strong>g you have 'akhay' mean<strong>in</strong>g 'my bro<strong>the</strong>rs' or 'my brethren'.<br />

<strong>The</strong> verb is Common Gender, First Person, Plural (hence <strong>the</strong> 'we' <strong>in</strong> 'we shall' or <strong>the</strong> 'us' <strong>in</strong> 'let us'). <strong>The</strong><br />

Suffix Number is S<strong>in</strong>gular, <strong>the</strong> Verbal Tense is Imperfect (<strong>in</strong>complete, ongo<strong>in</strong>g action), and <strong>the</strong> Verbal<br />

Conjugation is PEAL (<strong>the</strong> most direct-action verb <strong>in</strong> Aramaic – like how Qal or Kal is <strong>the</strong> most directaction<br />

verb <strong>in</strong> Hebrew), hence 'shall' <strong>in</strong> 'we shall' or <strong>the</strong> 'let' <strong>in</strong> 'let us'.<br />

16. Whatsoever place or as many as? – Mark 6:11<br />

This split word is very <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g, as <strong>the</strong> two ma<strong>in</strong> families of <strong>Greek</strong> texts, Byzant<strong>in</strong>e and Alexandrian,<br />

seem to be split right down <strong>the</strong> middle. In this verse, <strong>the</strong> Byzant<strong>in</strong>e texts tend to refer to places, while<br />

<strong>the</strong> Alexandrian texts tend to speak of people.<br />

<strong>The</strong> ASV says: “And whatsoever place shall not receive you, and <strong>the</strong>y hear you not, as ye go forth<br />

<strong>the</strong>nce, shake off <strong>the</strong> dust that is under your feet for a testimony unto <strong>the</strong>m.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> YLT says: “and as many as may not receive you, nor hear you, go<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong>nce, shake off <strong>the</strong> dust<br />

that is under your feet for a testimony to <strong>the</strong>m; verily I say to you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom<br />

or Gomorrah <strong>in</strong> a day of judgment than for that city.'”<br />

Versions that say whatsoever place, any place or a variation <strong>the</strong>reof: ASV, BBE, CEV, DARBY, ESV,<br />

Holman, ISV, NASB, NIV, NIV-UK, Ro<strong>the</strong>rham, RSV.<br />

Versions that say as many as, whoever, whosoever or a variation <strong>the</strong>reof: ALT, Douay-Rheims, Geneva,<br />

KJ21, KJV, LITV, MKJV,NKJV, Webster, Wycliffe, YLT.<br />

Now, it just so happens that <strong>the</strong> Aramaic root nm can mean both.<br />

Here is ano<strong>the</strong>r verse where <strong>the</strong> Byzant<strong>in</strong>e Majority text and both Stephens and Scrivener's Textus<br />

Receptus are all <strong>in</strong> agreement but <strong>the</strong> Alexandrian text has ano<strong>the</strong>r read<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
