AMAZ/Botanical Dimensions Digital<br />
Herbarium Project. We initiated<br />
support of this key initiative in 2010 to<br />
preserve and share the knowledge of<br />
one of the largest extant flora collections<br />
in Northern Peru. The AMAZ/<br />
Botanical Dimensions Digital Herbarium<br />
Project is a three-year effort to create<br />
a digital database of over 100,000<br />
species that had been collected in the<br />
Peruvian Amazon rainforest (shown<br />
left) since 1972. Appreciating that 25<br />
percent of medicines today come from<br />
rainforest botanicals, there is a real<br />
need to preserve and share the rich<br />
knowledge of the Amazon with scientists<br />
working around the globe. The<br />
information is being databased at the<br />
Universidad Nacional de la Amazonia<br />
Peruana (UNAP).<br />
