178 m, 16,007 t. Deflagged from Greece to Saint Kitts &<br />

Nevis for her last voyage. Classification society American Bureau<br />

of <strong>Ship</strong>ping. Built in 1958 in Newport News (United States) by<br />

Newport News SB . Originally an American liner for Grace Line<br />

under the name Santa Rosa (New York/Central America). Sold to<br />

the Greek owner Lelakis in 1989 and sent to Chalkis shipyards;<br />

she came out in 1993 as Regent Rainbow (Bahamian flag) for<br />

Regent Cruises (Lelakis). Seized in 1995 in Tampa (Florida)<br />

following Regent’s bankrupcy. Acquired in 1996 by Louis Cruise<br />

Lines from Cyprus and renamed The Emerald. Chartered for<br />

several years by the British Thomson Holidays, subsidiary of the<br />

German group TUI. Owned by Core Marine Ltd (Greece). Sold for<br />

demolition in India.<br />

Classification society RINA. Built in 1978 in Capelle (Netherlands) by Vuijk.<br />

Owned by Aegean Cargo Management SA (Greece). Detained in 2004 in Ronne (Denmark), in 2005 in<br />

Bayonne (France), in 2008 in Alexandria (Egypt) and in 2011 in Izmir (Turkey). Sold for demolition in<br />

Turkey.<br />

Alianca Ipanema (ex-Betelgeuse). IMO 9007269. Ro Ro. Length 192 m, 14,896 t. Deflagged from Brazil<br />

to Saint Kitts & Nevis for her last voyage. Classification society Bureau Veritas. Built in 1992 in Rio de<br />

Janeiro (Brazil) by EMAQ. Owned by Transroll Navegacao SA (Brazil). Sold for demolition in India.<br />

El Mergheb (ex-Balqees). IMO 8027846. Ro Ro. Length 111 m, 3,900 t.<br />

Libyan flag. Unknown classification society. Built in 1983 in Elsinore<br />

(Denmark) by Helsingor Vaerft. Acquired in 1996 by General National<br />

Maritime Transport Company, the Libyan state <strong>com</strong>pany. Detained in 1999 in Leghorn (Italy), in 2000 in<br />

Leghorn again then in Sevilla (Spain) and in 2001 in Naples (Italy). This sistership of the Al Zahraa (cf<br />

<strong>Ship</strong>-<strong>breaking</strong>.<strong>com</strong> # 25, The END, Saddam’s tank carrier) was also, as the Balquees of the Iraqi Navy,<br />

equipped for the transport of tanks and military equipment and a helicopter platform. Purchased by Libya<br />

in 1996, she had been laid up in the port of Benghazi (Libya) since 2003. Sold for demolition in Turkey.<br />
