potential leaders are more likely<br />

to be male and have worked at the<br />

<strong>RTA</strong> for four to five years and are<br />

currently undertaking work-related<br />

study.<br />

Potential leaders are most interested<br />

in developing their skills in contract<br />

management, financial management,<br />

policy skills and through exposure<br />

to different areas of the <strong>RTA</strong>.<br />

activities, those considered of most<br />

benefit were performance feedback<br />

from their manager, secondments<br />

to other parts of the <strong>RTA</strong> and<br />

short-term non-tertiary training.<br />

The survey uncovered a segment of staff<br />

that can be identified as a potential<br />

leadership pool. The <strong>RTA</strong> needs to<br />

encourage this group to re<strong>main</strong> with the<br />

<strong>RTA</strong>, develop their skills and take up the<br />

reins as other more senior staff move on.<br />

Health and Safety Statement<br />

The health and safety of our workforce<br />

has the highest priority at <strong>RTA</strong><br />

workplaces. We work in partnership with<br />

staff and managers to achieve this<br />

important goal and during 2005–06 the<br />

Executive OHS Committee met bimonthly<br />

to review OHS performance.<br />

The meetings were held in different<br />

locations around <strong>NSW</strong>, to demonstrate<br />

the Executive’s understanding and<br />

support for local managers and staff as<br />

they implement the <strong>RTA</strong>’s OHS policies<br />

and improvement initiatives.<br />

Policy and commitment statement<br />

An annual review of the <strong>RTA</strong> OHS Policy<br />

statement commits the <strong>RTA</strong> to developing<br />

a safety culture based on communication<br />

and awareness, reporting of hazards and<br />

incidents, continuous learning from<br />

experience and flexible decision-making<br />

in managing workplace risks. The policy<br />

statement is displayed prominently<br />

throughout <strong>RTA</strong> workplaces and features<br />

these key corporate initiatives from the<br />

OHS Strategic Plan 2003–08:<br />

Achievement of a partnership<br />

arrangement with WorkCover to<br />

manage regulatory compliance.<br />
