Accommodation and Shelter Conditions
Accommodation and shelter conditions were measured on the basis of clean, continuous
and sufficient drinking and utility water, the existence of waste water/sewerage systems,
and the environmental pollution, noise and effect of dust within the area of accommodation.
According to the findings shown in Table 6, the most important problem was the
non-existence of a sewerage system (18.9%). In this respect, the least problematic province
was Ordu (40% of children stated that there was a sewerage system) and the most
problematic province was Yozgat (all children stated that there was no sewerage system).
Thus, toilet needs are met in the open or in the fields. Other important problems concerned
liquid and solid waste, environmental pollution and dust. It should not be forgotten that
cleanliness of drinking and utility water is relative. It should be remembered that a child’s
concept of “cleanliness” depends on a comparison among the conditions which s/he experiences.
If the condition of the water in their usual place of residence and in the province/
district to which they migrate are similar, then children may answer “clean” although the
water is actually polluted.
