The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Clinical</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Guidelines</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Acute</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stroke</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Guidelines</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

have been developed by <strong>the</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>Stroke</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Foundati<strong>on</strong> according to processes prescribed by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Health and Medical Research Council<br />

(NHMRC) toolkit series under <strong>the</strong> directi<strong>on</strong> of an<br />

interdisciplinary Expert Working Group (EWG). The<br />

EWG has worked through a collaborative process,<br />

and networked with a number of <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mal and in<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mal<br />

groups and individuals from around Australia and<br />

overseas.<br />

The members of <strong>the</strong> expert working group assisted in:<br />

> Reviewing <strong>the</strong> framework of existing guidelines;<br />

> Identifying, reviewing and classifying relevant<br />

literature;<br />

> Developing <strong>the</strong> draft clinical guidelines;<br />

> Providing feedback gained through <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sultati<strong>on</strong><br />

process;<br />

> Developing a plan <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> communicati<strong>on</strong>, disseminati<strong>on</strong><br />

and implementati<strong>on</strong>; and<br />

> Developing recommendati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> periodically<br />

updating <strong>the</strong> guidelines.<br />

All members of <strong>the</strong> working group completed and<br />

signed a declarati<strong>on</strong> of potential c<strong>on</strong>flicts of interest<br />

with development of <strong>the</strong>se guidelines. Most had no<br />

perceived c<strong>on</strong>flicts. The reas<strong>on</strong>s provided <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> potential<br />

c<strong>on</strong>flicts primarily involved receiving m<strong>on</strong>ey from n<strong>on</strong><br />

commercial and commercial organisati<strong>on</strong>s specifically<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> undertaking clinical research. This was expected<br />

given <strong>the</strong> expertise of members of <strong>the</strong> working group<br />

in clinical research. Only a small number of members<br />

had received financial support from commercial<br />

companies <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> providing c<strong>on</strong>sultancy or lecturing.<br />
