Filler cap removed for refuelling
Filler cap
To open: The fuel filler cap is threaded. Turn
the cap slowly to the left (anticlockwise).
Cars adapted to run on E85 (85% ethanol):
Turn the fuel filler cap a quarter turn to the
left.
To close: Turn the fuel filler cap to the right
(clockwise) until you hear three clicks.
Cars adapted to run on E85 (85% ethanol):
Turn the fuel filler cap to the right (clockwise)
until you hear three clicks, about a
quarter of a turn.
Opening the fuel filler flap manually 3, see
page 60.
Refuelling
WARNING
If the tank starts to burn while you are
refuelling, do not remove the pump
nozzle. Cut the fuel supply. Inform the
staff. Leave the area immediately.
1 Switch off the engine.
2 Open the filler cap.
3 Insert the fuel pump nozzle beyond the
flange on the filler pipe and let the first
mark (a ring, a pimple or the first springcoil)
rest on the flange. Do not withdraw
the nozzle while filling is in progress.
4 Cease refuelling when the pump cuts
out for the first time.
NOTICE
Do not overfill. Fuel should not come right
up the filler pipe as room for expansion is
needed for when the temperature rises.
The most effective way to prevent condensation
forming in the tank (and thus avoid
possible running problems) is to keep the
tank well filled.
Refer to page 160 for information regarding
carburettor spirit.
Cars with diesel engine 3
Only use diesel fuel intended for vehicle
use. Diesel engines must be run on diesel
fuel that fulfils the EN590 European
standard. Never use domestic fuel oil,
marine diesel fuel or similar. The diesel fuel
must have a cetane rating of at least 45.
Fuel additives (flow improvers) and suchlike
agents must not be added to the diesel fuel.
Also, do not refuel from a diesel pump
intended for lorries. Such pumps have an
unsuitably high delivery capacity, which
would cause heavy foaming and cause the
pump to cut out too early.
Cease refuelling when the pump cuts out for
the first time.
NOTICE
Do not overfill. Fuel should not come right
up the filler pipe as room for expansion is
needed for when the temperature rises.
In low temperatures, a paraffin precipitate
may form in the diesel fuel which can cause
starting difficulties.
