Easy to grow. 4711 - Phlox “Twinkles mix” (Phlox drummondii) Masses of star-shaped flowers in a well balanced range of colors. Blooms continuously all summer. Great for ground covering, rock gardens and edging. 3831 - Lemon grass (Cymbopogon sp.) It is a grass with a citrus flavour and can be dried and powdered, or used fresh. Lemon grass is commonly used in teas, soups, and curries. It is also suitable for poultry, fish, and seafood. 3833 - Ornamental California Bluebell (Phacelia camapnularia) Has intense deep blue colour of the bell-shaped flowers. “Organic” for a healthy nature and for the happiness of the people Every home garden (vegetable, fruit, and decorative with lawn) can be an organic, healthy garden in which no pestcides for the prevention of bothersome animals, fungi, and weeds, as well as synthetic fertilisers are used. In such a garden, we will always cultivate tasty and healthy vegetables and fruit, aromatic herbs, and exuberant flowers. WHAT IS ORGANIC FARMING Organic farming combines environmentally friendly, socially just, and economically justified production of food and raw materials. However, the basis of a successful organic farming is the care for the FERTILITY (FRUITFUL- NESS) OF THE SOIL. Organic farming is done in the way that nature (plants, animals, landscapes) is optimally considered and adapted to. With organic farming, synthetic fertilisers, pesticides and pharmaceutical products are NOT used, so the farmers and gardeners are INDEPENDENT. Thus, with the consideration of nature and thanks to nature itself, we are producing a lot of healthy and tasty food. Organic farming is defined around the world with internationally adopted laws, regulations, and directives. However, the regulations can differ from country to country in certain details because social and economical, geoclimatic, and cultural conditions inside a specific country must be considered. We are organic gardeners because we want to live healthily and rich, as well as protect our environment and nature. It is thus once again ascertained that the essence of organic farming is the ability to listen to the nature and to take care of the soil fertility. Carrot Nantaise amelioree 2 This carrot needs deep soil rich in humus, fertilised with compost. Grow carrots with onion or leek, because they protect each other from the attack of harmful flies or moths. Good neighbours are also peas (because they loosen the soil), tomato, chicory, radishes, and chard. Parsley Comun 2 It has plenty of smooth and aromatic leaves (they contain essential oils, plenty of minerals and vitamins A, B, and C) which we often harvest so that there is as few stems as possible. Must be sown on a different garden bed each year. Good neighbours are tomato, onion, and radishes. Beetroot Detroit 2 We fertilise beetroot with broth made of comfrey which contains potassium which is necessary particularly for the development of roots. The groundcover is preserving the moisture of the soil. Good neighbours for beetroot are kohlrabi, lettuce, cucumbers, and peas. Radish Saxa 2 It demands fine soil which is rich in humus and always evenly moist. Good neighbours are cress, lettuce, beans, tomato, spinach, cabbage, and carrot. Radish can be grown in the vicinity of other vegetables or flowers everywhere in the garden. BioValentin Lettuce “Ljubljanska ledenka” This is a Slovenian summer ICEBERG lettuce with compact yellow-green heads with wavy and serrated leaves. It tolerates summer heat and it takes long before it bolts. It can be planted in every sunny spot as “gap filler”. In mixed crop, it grows excellently with carrots, spinach, beans, and onion. Lettuce Salad Bowl, Mix This is a iceberg lettuce with a voluminous and open rosette. It does not form heads. The rosettes are red and green with gentle leaves in the shape of an oak-tree leaf. We cut only the leaves or the whole rosettes. It does not bolt, so we have fresh lettuce in our garden from spring to autumn. The lettuce needs compost and enough moisture. It should grow with the following good neighbours: radish, kohlrabi, spinach, cabbage, tomato, beans, and onion. Chicory Palla Rossa 2 This is early chicory which forms a red round head. It is sensitive to cold. It demands first-class garden soil. It has excellent taste and its bitter ingredients are regulating digestion, stimulating blood circulation and metabolism. Chicory Zuccherina Di Trieste It has light green, smooth, and soft leaves. In spring may develop small green, pointed heads. It should be sown densely from spring to autumn, so that the leaves remain gentle. It over winters. Good neighbours are tomato, pole beans, carrot, lettuce, and summer savory. However, its bad neighbour is parsley. 35 Organic Chicory Grumolo Verde This chicory forms a rosette with green compact leaves in spring. Tasty chicory leaves which contain plenty of vitamins (A, B1, B2, and C) and minerals (calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, magnesium) are great as a salad. Its good neighbours are tomato, pole beans, lettuce, carrot, and dill. Endive Bionda a cuore pieno This is a summer variety with big, cumular yellow-green rosettes. Warm places and appropriately moist soil suit it best. In crop rotatition, it follows early brassicas, early potato, peas, dwarf beans, onion, and beetroot. Cress Comune This is a very fast-growing plant rich in various vitamins (mostly in vitamin C), calcium, iron, and iodine. It is of a refreshingly spicy taste because it contains mustard oil. It is sown each year in the open air and during winters in the apartments on window shelves. When it reaches the height of 10 cm, it should be cut. It is overgrowing fast. It is a good neighbour to radish with which they positively influence each other’s aromas. Spinach Matador This is a fast-growing variety suitable for autumn or spring sowing. It has big dark green and shiny leaves rich in vitamin C and iron. It grows well in a moist soil rich in humus (the soil should be covered so that there remains enough moisture in it). The smell of spinach prevents pests from attacking so there should be some plants all over the garden. After the harvesting, the roots should be left in the ground. Leek Carentan 3 The white part of the stem of the leek Carentan is medium long, thick, and slightly onion-shaped on the bottom part. It passes the winter excellently. It grows best on fertile, deep soil fertilised with compost. Against a leek moth (the damage is done by the larva) it should be sprinkled with horsetail tea. Good neighbours are particularly the carrot and also celery, tomato, lettuce, brassicas, and strawberries. Tomato Oxheart The soil should be rich in humus and well fertilised. The fruits are characteristically “heart-shaped”, fleshy, and shiny red.
