Ground preparation for sowing
Ground preparation is essential in order to obtain
superior lawn. Before sowing we have to thoroughly
loosen the soil, remove weeds, roots, stones and
add slowly active special grass fertilizer (=Valentin
fertilizer for lawn). We add sand to heavy or wet
ground (a lot of clay) in order to make it more airy.
We add peat and compost to sandy ground. By doing
that we increase the ability of sandy ground to
retain water and nutriments. After that we even and
rake the surface in order to obtain well laid surface.
Sowing
We sow throughout the period of vegetation however
avoiding the drought period. The most appropriate
time for sowing is from the middle of April
till the end of May and from the middle of August
till the end of September. It is best to sow
in cloudy or humid weather conditions.
The box containing seed has to be well shaken
before sowing.
Methods of sowing:
1. We divide the surface into several smaller
parts. On each part we first sow half of the
seeds starting from left to the right and the other
half from top to bottom.
2. We sow the seeds as evenly as possible
throughout the surface.
Using a wooden rake we slightly rake the sown
surface in order to mix the seeds with soil and
than flatten it. We may however cover the surface
with a thin layer of sifted soil after sowing. We
water the land after sowing and flattening to enable
a good contact of seeds with the ground. If
the vegetation conditions are good the grass seed
germinates in 16-28 days.
Mowing
Regular mowing, which enhances the regeneration
of grass is the best maintenance work.
By mowing the grass thickens and gains an intensive
green colour. We mow for the first time when
the grass is 6-10 cm high cutting it above the
height of 4-5 cm. Gradually we lower the height of
mowing to 3-4 cm.
It is important:
• we regularly mow once a week or more but at
least three times a month
• we always mow at the same height at 2/3 of
the grass height (removing 1/3 of leaf mass)
• during the summer heat we mow less often and
a little higher
• we remove the mown residues from the lawn.
