three-year term. <strong>Student</strong>s that have concerns <strong>the</strong>y would like <strong>the</strong> Area Representatives to address may<br />

participate in area meetings or contact any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> members.<br />

Listings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Area Representatives are available in <strong>the</strong> Academic Affairs Office.<br />

Curriculum Committee<br />

The Curriculum Committee oversees <strong>the</strong> curriculum for immediate and longer-range purposes. The<br />

committee works to ensure that <strong>the</strong> curriculum supports <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s mission and serves student needs.<br />

The committee is charged with <strong>the</strong> following responsibilities:<br />

° Reviews and approves course <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />

° Works to streng<strong>the</strong>n connection between and to limit redundancy among areas.<br />

° Assists in developing cross-disciplinary programs.<br />

° Identifies curricular resource needs.<br />

° Plans for curriculum development.<br />

The committee is also responsible for developing means <strong>of</strong> assessing <strong>the</strong> effectiveness <strong>of</strong> academic<br />

programs.<br />

Membership: Seven regular faculty members and two students.<br />

The process <strong>of</strong> building a curriculum begins with area meetings at which students and faculty examine<br />

current and proposed curriculum and equipment needs. After <strong>the</strong>se initial meetings, <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>the</strong>n<br />

present <strong>the</strong>ir proposed curriculum and make recommendations for a budget in support <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> curriculum.<br />

The committee gives initial approval <strong>of</strong> area proposals and <strong>the</strong>n presents <strong>the</strong> entire proposed curriculum<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Executive Committee and <strong>the</strong> dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> for final review and approval.<br />

Dean <strong>of</strong> Faculty’s Advisory Committee<br />

The dean <strong>of</strong> faculty’s Advisory Committee serves as a faculty steering committee. It assigns tasks to<br />

committees as needed, provides coordination and communication among <strong>the</strong> major committees, meets<br />

with and advises <strong>the</strong> dean <strong>of</strong> faculty, and in emergency circumstances (when <strong>the</strong> faculty cannot be called<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r), is empowered to act for <strong>the</strong> faculty. This committee also reviews any proposed change in <strong>the</strong><br />

Faculty <strong>Handbook</strong> and forwards <strong>the</strong> proposed change, along with its recommendation, to <strong>the</strong> full faculty<br />

for action.<br />

Membership: Faculty co-chairs and chairs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following committees: Curriculum, Budget, Faculty<br />

Affairs, and Graduate Program Steering Committee; and <strong>the</strong> chair <strong>of</strong> Visual and Critical Studies; <strong>the</strong> vicechair<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Planning Committee; and two students. The dean <strong>of</strong> faculty chairs this committee and a vicechair<br />

is elected from among <strong>the</strong> faculty members.<br />

Exhibitions and Programs Committee<br />

The Exhibitions and Programs Committee advises <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>School</strong> Curator on public programs,<br />

exhibitions, and visiting artist schedule for <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

Contact <strong>the</strong> Exhibitions and Public Programs <strong>of</strong>fice for information regarding lectures, exhibitions,<br />

exhibiting opportunities, curatorial opportunities, awards, and o<strong>the</strong>r related <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />

Membership: SMFA and MFA staff, students, four faculty members appointed by <strong>the</strong> President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong>, <strong>the</strong> SMFA Curator. Chaired by <strong>the</strong> President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> or his/her designee.
