Graduation Requirements, Policies, and Procedures - by Program<br />
<strong>Museum</strong> <strong>School</strong> Studio Programs<br />
The <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>the</strong> following studio-based programs that result in certificates granted by <strong>the</strong><br />
institution.<br />
Studio Diploma Program<br />
The Studio Diploma is awarded to students who successfully complete 112 semester hours <strong>of</strong> credit in<br />
studio art. Art history courses are optional and are in addition to studio classes. The last six credits must<br />
be earned as a matriculated Day <strong>School</strong> Diploma student; <strong>the</strong> credits cannot be earned through<br />
Continuing Education. <strong>Student</strong>s are required to petition <strong>the</strong> Registrar’s <strong>of</strong>fice in order to be reviewed for<br />
graduation. Petitions for December graduation should be submitted no later than <strong>the</strong> last day <strong>of</strong> October<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same year. Petitions for May graduation should be submitted no later than <strong>the</strong> last day <strong>of</strong> February<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same year. Note: December graduates participate in May graduation exercises.<br />
Fifth Year Certificate<br />
The program requires attending monthly meetings and independent work in preparation for participation<br />
in <strong>the</strong> Fifth Year Exhibition. <strong>Student</strong>s work <strong>of</strong>f site, unless school equipment access is necessary, and do<br />
not enroll in classes but may audit a class with permission from <strong>the</strong> instructor. Studio and/or storage<br />
spaces are not <strong>of</strong>fered as part <strong>of</strong> this program. Each student is awarded a teaching assistantship working<br />
each semester for 6 contract hours per week per semester. The program culminates with <strong>the</strong> Fifth Year<br />
Exhibition where all participants compete for <strong>the</strong> Traveling Scholars Awards, which include substantial<br />
funds for travel and participation <strong>the</strong> SMFA Traveling Scholars exhibition at <strong>the</strong> MFA. Contact <strong>the</strong><br />
Associate Dean <strong>of</strong> Academic Affairs, Graduate Programs for more information on <strong>the</strong> Fifth Year Certificate<br />
program.<br />
Post-Baccalaureate Certificate<br />
The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate is awarded to students who have been formally admitted to <strong>the</strong><br />
program and have successfully completed two full-time studio semesters, one art history course, and <strong>the</strong><br />
Post-Baccalaureate Seminar. Art history may be taken in ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> spring or <strong>the</strong> fall. The Post-<br />
Baccalaureate Program takes one academic year to complete. Any Post-Baccalaureate student whose<br />
credit is withheld both semesters will be withdrawn from <strong>the</strong> program. If <strong>the</strong> credit is made up in a future<br />
Review Board, <strong>the</strong> credit will count toward <strong>the</strong> Studio Diploma.<br />
Degree Programs<br />
Tufts University awards degrees in partnership with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>School</strong> upon completion <strong>of</strong> specific<br />
degree requirements. <strong>Student</strong>s graduate in November, February, and May. <strong>Student</strong>s are required to<br />
petition <strong>the</strong> Academic Affairs Office in order to be reviewed for graduation. Please contact Academic<br />
Affairs for deadlines and more detailed information.<br />
Bachelor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Arts</strong><br />
The Bachelor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> (BFA) requires <strong>the</strong> successful completion <strong>of</strong> 84 credits in studio art and 14<br />
academic courses from <strong>the</strong> list <strong>of</strong> requirements. For detailed information about <strong>the</strong> BFA program, consult<br />
<strong>the</strong> BFA Policy Book. Bachelor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Arts</strong>, Nor<strong>the</strong>astern University<br />
Five-Year Combined Degree<br />
The five-year Combined Degree (BA/BFA or BS/BFA) requires 84 credits in studio art and a minimum <strong>of</strong> 24<br />
academic courses. <strong>Student</strong>s must meet all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> requirements for <strong>the</strong> BA/BS as well as completing five<br />
courses in art history.
