History <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Arts</strong><br />

The SMFA <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Handbook</strong>, published by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Student</strong> Affairs Office, is a compilation <strong>of</strong> resource<br />

information and current policies and procedures for <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Arts</strong>, Boston. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> event <strong>of</strong> a discrepancy between <strong>the</strong> contents <strong>of</strong> this document and any <strong>School</strong> practice or<br />

procedure, <strong>the</strong> actual <strong>School</strong> policy will prevail. The <strong>School</strong> reserves <strong>the</strong> right to make modifications to<br />

<strong>the</strong> contents <strong>of</strong> this document, and every attempt will be made to keep you informed <strong>of</strong> any major<br />

changes that occur. While this document is not a contract, it does represent <strong>the</strong> spirit in which issues<br />

will be addressed at <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

IMPORTANT NOTE: The contents <strong>of</strong> this handbook are subject to change throughout <strong>the</strong> academic year<br />

as a result <strong>of</strong> new or modified institutional policy and/or procedure, administrative and/or staff<br />

restructuring, and changes to facilities. Any changes that occur will be communicated to students<br />

through one or more <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> recognized communication vehicles. Please confirm hours <strong>of</strong> operation,<br />

addresses, telephone numbers, etc., before visiting <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fices, businesses, or institutions listed.<br />

Accreditation<br />

The <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Arts</strong>, Boston, is an accredited institutional member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

National Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>School</strong>s <strong>of</strong> Art and Design (NASAD, 11250 Roger Bacon Drive, Suite 21, Reston,<br />

VA, 703-437-0700).<br />

The <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>School</strong> is recognized by <strong>the</strong> State Department <strong>of</strong> Education as an institution <strong>of</strong> higher<br />

education. It is accredited by <strong>the</strong> United States Department <strong>of</strong> Justice for foreign students and by <strong>the</strong><br />

Veterans Administration for training under Public Law 550 and Chapter 35, Title 38, United States Code.<br />

The <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>the</strong> four-year Diploma, <strong>the</strong> Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, and <strong>the</strong> Fifth Year<br />

Certificate.<br />

Through its partnership with Tufts University, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>the</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> (BFA),<br />

Combined Degree (BA/BFA or BS/BFA), Master <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> (MFA), and Master <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> in Teaching (MAT)<br />

in Art Education degree programs. Tufts University awards <strong>the</strong>se degrees in cooperation with <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Museum</strong> <strong>School</strong>. The New England Association <strong>of</strong> Colleges and Secondary <strong>School</strong>s regionally accredits<br />

Tufts University. All teacher-preparation programming <strong>of</strong>fered through <strong>the</strong> Tufts/<strong>Museum</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

affiliation is Interstate Certification Compact-approved in Massachusetts, and graduates are eligible for<br />

reciprocal certification in forty-one o<strong>the</strong>r states.<br />

Through its partnership with Nor<strong>the</strong>astern University, <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>the</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> (BFA)<br />

and Master <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fine</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> (MFA) in Studio Art.
