Far Away, So Close
Recuperating from the expensive english-
Idnguage flop "Until the End of the World,"
German filnimakerWimWenders retraces his
steps with this sequel to "Wings of Desire,"
one of the most popular foreign films ever.
The original told the story of a guardian angel,
played by Bruno Ganz, who falls in love with
a human and becomes a man so he can court
her. The sequel focuses on Otto Sander as
Cassiel, an angel Ganz left behind when he
fell to earth. Original cast members Peter Falk,
Solveig Dommartin and Ganz are joined by
Natassja Kinski ("Cat People"), and Roberto
Begnini ("Night on Earth"). Advance reviews
have been negative. (Distribution pending).
Wrestling Ernest Hemingway
Shirley MacLaine takes her annual Oscarqualifying
stab at playing a crotchety old
biddie in "Wrestling Ernest Hemingway," a
buddy-comedy about the friendship which
develops between retirees Robert Duvall and
Richard Harris in a Florida retirement community,
with MacLaine as a hot-to-trot senior
sexpot. Directed by Randa Haines ("Children
of a Lesser God"). (Warner Bros., Dec)
Foot." "In the Name of the Father" tells the
true-life story of Gerry Conlon (Day-Lewis), a
Belfast man imprisoned by the British for 15
years for a terrorist act he didn't commit. The
film has already provoked controversy, with
co-star Emma Thompson ("FHoward's
End")
taking flack from the British press forthe film's
supposed pro-IRA stance. Script by Sheridan
and Terry George from Conlon's prison memoir
"Proved Innocent." (Universal, Dec.)
My Life
It used to be that when a comedic actor
wanted to be taken seriously, he'd make a
movie riddled with Chaplinesque pathos.
Now comedians seem to be turning to disease-of-the
-week motifs, with Tom FHanks as
an AIDS victim in "Philadelphia" and Michael
Keaton as a Hollywood publicist (does this
guy want sympathy^ dying of cancer who
decides to make a video of his life so his
unborn child will be able to know him. Both
Keaton and FHanks have long been undervalued
as actors (we defy any actor to top the
FHanks' grieving phone confessional in
"Sleepless in Seattle"), so here's hoping "My
Life" is the showcase Keaton deserves. Written
and directed by Bruce )oel Rubin
("Ghost"); co-starring Nicole Kidman and
Queen Latifah. (Columbia, Nov. 12)
