And where we've gone in and built theatres like that, we can demonstrate in hard numbers the fact that we've been able to expand tlie market. We have increased moviegoing there." Does Campbell think exhibition has reached a saturation point? "I think some markets are overscreened," he says. "I think there are still numerous opportunities in other markets that are either underscreened or in need of more modem facilities." And does Regal do anything to protect itself against a screen glut? "Well, I think that's a risk we always take, " Campbell says. "But it just seems logical, the way the industry's going, that the burgeoning ancillary markets with film entertainment, such as cable TV and videocassettes, and now pay-per-view, are driving the industry in general. Even though movie theatres are still the engine that drives the train, the other ancillary' markets are what makes the industry attractive for production companies. As for what that's doing— I think it's evident now diat there is an increase in film production; it's obviously going to take more screens to take care of the films." "Let's put it into perspective," says Campbell. "This past summer was a record one. But in many [Regal] theatres ^vhere we have as many as 14, 16 or 18 screens in a zone, we were still not able to open up all the films that needed to be opened. As long as the ancillary markets are increasing the total revenue pie for the production companies, there's going to be an ample supply of film product to fill up tlie screens." "In my opinion, " adds Campbell, "and this is already the case, you're going to see increasing niche marketing for films. When we got into the business 10 years ago, the most successful films seemed to be the ones that were just a general audience film, but today diere have been several films targeted at certain age groups or certain income or ethnic groups that have been vety successfill. I think that the ability to market films on a niche basis is much greater today." And how does the rise in popularity ofdie independent film influence the market? Says Campbell, "I think there are always going to be people in the independent [film] community that if they take the pulse right, so to speak, of the filmgoing community, they are going to be successful. I think the biggest problem tliat independent companies are going to continue to face is capital, and I think that's where the advantage of being a major studio comes in— that is, tlie capital is available to produce these films." "It remains to be seen, " he adds, "whedier or not these independent companies that are being absorbed into the smdios can maintain their flair for tlie niche films. The general appeal films are always going to be the most successftil. We design our theatres with a very wide seating capacity range. If you look at Huntingdon Valley, our large theatre seats something over 500 people; the smallest ones seat 1 30. 1 think that when you have a wide range of seating capacities like that it enables us to exhibit some more specialized films profitably without tying up a 400 or 500-seat theatre. And all of our newtheatres are designed witli that concept. Regal Cinemas has a philosophy, concludes Campbell, that has enabled it to grow rapidly and profitably. "We've gone from basically zero to a public company in a little over diree years. I think our strategy is one of rational business evaluations, cost control at all levels and providing excellent service and, hopefully, a superior moviegoing experience. And ifyou try to do all those things you can't go wrong."
